Dan Snyder is an American advertising executive and sports team owner best known for owning the NFL’s Washington Commanders, which he purchased in 1999 for $800 million. Snyder sold the team in May 2023 for $6 billion, setting a record for the most expensive North American sports team sale ever.

Early Life and Education

Daniel Snyder was born to Jewish parents, Gerald and Arlette, in Silver Spring, Maryland. He attended Hillandale Elementary School before moving to England for private schooling. Snyder later returned to the US, living in New York City with his grandmother, and then Maryland, where he attended Charles W. Woodward High School. He briefly attended the University of Maryland, College Park, but dropped out to pursue business ventures.

Career Beginnings

At 20, Snyder started a business leasing jets for college students to travel during spring break. He later launched Campus USA, a college magazine funded by Mortimer Zuckerman and Fred Drasner, which eventually shut down.

Snyder Communications

In 1988, Snyder and his sister Michele founded Snyder Communications, focusing on wallboard advertising in colleges and doctors’ offices, and product sampling. The company expanded into direct marketing, database marketing, and call centers. Snyder Communications went public in 1996, making Snyder the youngest-ever CEO of a NYSE-listed company at 32. The company grew rapidly, employing over 12,000 people and generating $1 billion in annual revenue by 1998. Snyder sold the company to French marketing and PR group Havas for $2 billion in 2000, personally earning $300 million.

Washington Redskins / Commanders

Snyder purchased the Washington Redskins, now the Washington Commanders, and Jack Kent Cooke Stadium in 1999 for $800 million. The transaction was largely financed by loans, putting the team in debt. Snyder sold ownership portions to Robert Rothman, Dwight Schar, and Frederick W. Smith to pay off the debt. After blocking their attempts to sell their combined stake to an outside party in 2020, Snyder bought back the remaining ownership stake with a $400 million debt waiver. He sold the Commanders in May 2023 to Josh Harris and a group of investors for $6 billion.

Controversies

Snyder’s tenure as team owner was marked by numerous controversies. He resisted changing the team’s offensive name until 2020, amid pressure from advocacy groups, fans, politicians, and sponsors. The name was changed to Washington Commanders in 2022. Allegations of a toxic workplace culture under Snyder’s ownership led to an independent investigation, resulting in a $10 million NFL fine. Snyder was also accused of underreporting ticket sales to the NFL and IRS and driving up prices by selling tickets to third-party vendors. Additionally, he faced criticism for environmental damage after cutting down old-growth trees on national parkland behind his house.

Other Business Endeavors

Through RedZone Capital, Snyder acquired 12% of Six Flags’ stock in 2005 and became chairman. After Six Flags filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, Snyder was removed. He also purchased the Johnny Rockets restaurant chain, which he sold in 2013 to Sun Capital Partners. From 2007 to 2012, he owned Dick Clark Productions.

Personal Life

In 1994, Snyder married former fashion model Tanya Ivey. The couple has three children and resides in Alexandria, Virginia. Tanya became co-CEO of the Washington Commanders in 2021.

Yachts

Snyder owns several luxury yachts. In 2011, he bought a 224-foot yacht named Lady Anne for $70 million. In 2019, he purchased a 305-foot yacht named Lady S for $100 million, featuring an IMAX theater, helipad, and sports facilities.

Real Estate

Virginia Estate: In November 2022, Snyder bought a 16.5-acre property in Alexandria, Virginia, part of George Washington’s River Farm estate, for $48 million.

Potomac Mansion: In 2001, Snyder purchased a 30,000-square-foot mansion in Potomac, Maryland, from the King of Jordan for $8.64 million.

Dan Snyder’s career spans multiple industries, from advertising and sports team ownership to real estate and entertainment, marked by significant business achievements and controversies.
