Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero (December 12, 1937 – July 16, 2025), known professionally as Connie Francis, was an American singer, musician, actress, and author. She was one of the best-selling female vocalists of the late 1950s and early 1960s, with more than 200 million records sold worldwide. Known for hits like Who’s Sorry Now?, Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool, and Where the Boys Are, she became the first woman to top the Billboard Hot 100 and the first to achieve three No. 1 singles on the chart.
Francis recorded songs in multiple languages including English, Italian, German, Yiddish, French, and Japanese, making her an international star across Europe, Asia, and American immigrant communities. Between 1958 and 1964, before the British Invasion, she was considered the most popular female singer in the United States.
Her career was interrupted in the mid-1970s after a violent assault in 1974, followed by years of trauma and personal struggles. Despite setbacks, she staged comebacks in the 1980s and 1990s, performing worldwide until her retirement in 2018. In 2025, she regained viral popularity on TikTok with her 1962 recording Pretty Little Baby.
Francis died in Pompano Beach, Florida, on July 16, 2025, at the age of 87.
Early Life
Connie Francis was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Italian-American parents. She grew up bilingual in English and Yiddish and began performing in childhood talent shows while playing the accordion. She later attended Belleville High School, graduating as salutatorian in 1955.
Advised by Arthur Godfrey, she adopted the stage name Connie Francis and dropped the accordion, focusing on vocals. She worked as a demo singer before signing with MGM Records in 1955.
Career
Breakthrough
Francis’s early singles failed commercially until her 1958 cover of Who’s Sorry Now? became an international success after being featured on American Bandstand. It launched her into stardom, earning her recognition as Best Female Vocalist by Bandstand viewers for four consecutive years.
She followed with major hits including Stupid Cupid, My Happiness, Lipstick on Your Collar, and Among My Souvenirs. In 1960, Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool became the first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 by a woman.
International Stardom
Her 1959 album Connie Francis Sings Italian Favorites achieved worldwide success, leading to a series of “favorites” albums in multiple languages. She became especially popular in Germany, Italy, and Japan, achieving several international chart-toppers.
Francis also starred in films, including Where the Boys Are (1960), Follow the Boys (1963), and Looking for Love (1964). The song Where the Boys Are became her signature hit.
Setbacks and Comebacks
In 1974, Francis survived a violent rape at knifepoint in New York, an event that deeply affected her mental health and career. She later won a landmark lawsuit against the hotel chain.
After intermittent recording in the late 1970s and early 1980s, she staged a comeback with the album I’m Me Again (1981). She continued to record and tour internationally through the 1990s, including successful shows in Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Manila.
Later Years
Francis retired in 2018 but briefly regained public attention in 2025 when Pretty Little Baby went viral on TikTok, introducing her to a younger audience.
Personal Life
Francis was married four times, all ending in divorce, and adopted one son. She had a long-term relationship with Tony Ferretti from 2003 until his death in 2022. She previously had a relationship with singer Bobby Darin, which she later called the greatest lost love of her life.
