Chyeranovskii BICh-3 was a Soviet tailless experimental aircraft developed in 1926 by aviation pioneer Boris Ivanovich Chyeranovskii (also spelled Cheranovsky). The aircraft was part of the early Soviet Union’s efforts to explore flying wing concepts, placing it among the earliest tailless powered aircraft ever flown. The BICh-3 is notable for its radical aerodynamic design and its role in the evolution of modern delta and blended wing body aircraft.

1. Background and Development

Following the success of his unpowered tailless gliders, the BICh-1 and BICh-2, Boris Chyeranovskii sought to create a powered variant that could further validate his theories on tailless aircraft design. These designs were part of a broader Soviet interest in aerodynamic efficiency and futuristic aircraft configurations.

The BICh-3, completed in 1926, marked a significant progression by adding a small internal combustion engine and pilot cockpit to the already unconventional wing-based airframe. The experimental aircraft was intended as a research platform to investigate the stability and control of flying wings.

2. Design and Features

The Chyeranovskii BICh-3 was constructed primarily from wood, following standard material usage in Soviet aviation during the interwar period. It featured:

  • Parabolic Wing Planform: With a curved leading edge and a straight trailing edge, designed for lift and minimal drag.
  • Tailless Configuration: No horizontal stabilizer; the wing acted as the primary lift and control surface.
  • Single Fin and Rudder: Blended into the cockpit fairing to maintain aerodynamic smoothness.
  • Mono-wheel Undercarriage: A single faired wheel beneath the fuselage, supported by wingtip skids for balance during taxiing and landing.
  • Engine: Powered by a small Blackburne Tomtit engine delivering just 18 horsepower, mounted in a pusher configuration.

The compact aircraft had a wingspan of 9.5 meters (31 ft 2 in) and was designed for a single pilot seated directly in front of the vertical fin.

3. Flight Testing and Performance

Initial flight tests began in Moscow in 1926, revealing that the aircraft was unstable, especially in pitch control, due to its highly unconventional configuration. The aircraft underwent several aerodynamic refinements to improve its behavior.

Despite early challenges, the BICh-3 eventually proved stable enough to be considered safe to fly, offering crucial insights into the dynamic behavior of tailless aircraft. However, the powerplant was underpowered for any serious performance, and the aircraft remained an experimental one-off.


4. Legacy and Influence

Although the Chyeranovskii BICh-3 was not intended for production or operational military use, it was a foundational step in Soviet flying wing research. Chyeranovskii would go on to develop several more tailless aircraft, including the BICh-7, BICh-11, and BICh-26.

The lessons learned from the BICh-3 contributed to the body of aerodynamic knowledge that later informed the design of more advanced jet-powered flying wings and blended body aircraft like the Horten Ho 229 and Northrop YB-35.
