Tucked further north beyond Irong Hill, the Chuine Community Conservancy unfolds as one of Baringo County’s most ecologically rich and scenic landscapes. Overlooking Sandai and stretching toward the Laikipia Escarpment, Chuine forms a natural border with the proposed Arabal Conservancy, creating an expansive wildlife corridor that bridges Laikipia’s rangelands with the Lake Bogoria National Reserve ecosystem.
The conservancy serves as a vital grazing reserve for local communities, where grass and shrublands are carefully preserved for livestock during the dry season. Its extensive acacia woodlands also provide abundant pollen and nectar, supporting a thriving population of honey-producing bees, making beekeeping one of the area’s sustainable economic activities. This delicate balance between wildlife conservation and community livelihood makes Chuine a model of harmony between people and nature.
A biosphere survey on ecosystem services ranked Chuine Conservancy second only to Lake Bogoria National Reserve in terms of ecosystem value and biodiversity significance. This recognition underscores its importance as a biodiversity research hub, ideal for ecological studies and conservation projects. The conservancy is also a breeding site for the Greater Kudu and serves as a migratory corridor for numerous species moving between Laikipia and Lake Bogoria.
For wildlife enthusiasts, researchers, and eco-travelers, Chuine offers a glimpse of Baringo’s untouched wilderness—a landscape where rolling grasslands meet escarpments, and where conservation is powered by community commitment. It stands as part of Kenya’s growing network of over 110 wildlife conservancies, each contributing to improved land management, security, income generation, and the sustainable coexistence of humans and wildlife.
Chuine Community Conservancy not only safeguards biodiversity but also preserves the cultural and ecological heartbeat of northern Baringo—a living testament to the strength of community-led conservation in Kenya’s Rift Valley.
