Renowned chef and culinary innovator Fatmata Binta has been appointed as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Africa, recognizing her commitment to promoting African heritage foods and empowering women farmers across the continent.

Born in Sierra Leone and now based in Ghana, Binta has spent years championing underused African crops and supporting rural communities through sustainable food systems. Accepting her appointment on Thursday, she said, “This role means standing at the intersection of culture, food, and policy — advocating for Africa’s forgotten foods and ensuring rural communities are heard.”

Honoring African Food Heritage

Binta made history as the first African to win the Basque Culinary World Prize, a global honor celebrating chefs who make a positive impact beyond the kitchen. She founded the acclaimed Dine on a Mat nomadic restaurant, which celebrates Fulani culture, and the Fulani Kitchen Foundation, an initiative dedicated to uplifting small-scale female farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.

Through her culinary advocacy, Binta has promoted indigenous ingredients such as fonio, millet, and baobab, helping reconnect African communities with their food traditions while supporting climate-resilient agriculture.

Recognition on World Food Day

Her appointment coincided with World Food Day, during which the FAO celebrated its 80th anniversary. The organization highlighted Binta’s work as a reflection of Africa’s growing influence on global food innovation and sustainability.

FAO officials praised her for using food as a tool for empowerment, environmental awareness, and cultural preservation, emphasizing how her initiatives align with the UN’s mission to achieve food security for all.

Binta’s new ambassadorial role is expected to strengthen regional efforts in sustainable agriculture, women’s empowerment, and nutrition awareness, reaffirming her position as one of Africa’s most inspiring culinary voices.
