Bob Hund (Swedish for “Bob Dog”) is a Swedish indie rock band formed in 1991, celebrated for their energetic live shows, humorous lyrics, and inventive sound that blends elements of Pere Ubu, Pixies, and Kraftwerk. The band sings exclusively in Swedish and has remained a cult favorite across Scandinavia, with a loyal fanbase in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark.
Their music is characterized by playful experimentation, quirky stage presence, and lyrical wit, earning them several Swedish Grammy Awards (Grammisgalan) for Best Live Band and Best Lyrics.
History
Bob Hund was formed by Thomas Öberg (vocals) and Jonas Jonasson (keyboards) after meeting in high school. The lineup was completed with Conny Nimmersjö, Johnny Essing (guitars), Mats Hellqvist (bass), and Mats Andersson (drums).
Signed to Silence Records in 1993, they released their debut EP bob hund (1) the same year, followed by their first full-length album bob hund (2) in 1994, which earned them the Rock Band of the Year award at the Swedish Grammis.
In 1996, the band released Omslag: Martin Kann, named after their graphic designer and friend. The album reached Sweden’s Top 10, featuring singles such as I stället för musik, förvirring and Düsseldorf.
Despite their Swedish lyrics, Bob Hund attracted international attention. British guitarist Graham Coxon of Blur publicly expressed admiration for the group. The band went on to perform at major festivals including Roskilde, Hultsfred, Ruisrock, and Quart, building a reputation for high-energy, theatrical performances.
Their 1998 album Jag rear ut min själ! Allt skall bort!!! (I’m Selling Off My Soul! Everything Must Go!!!) cemented their status as one of Sweden’s most inventive bands. A live album, bob hund sover aldrig (bob hund Never Sleeps), followed in 1999.
Hiatus and Side Projects
In the early 2000s, the band briefly slowed down after their equipment was stolen. Members explored side projects such as Bergman Rock, an English-language rock act, and Sci-Fi SKANE, a dance music duo.
Returning in 2001 with Stenåldern kan börja (The Stone Age May Begin), Bob Hund achieved their first number-one album in Sweden. They followed it with Ingenting (Nothing, 2002), a collection of early demos, and 10 år bakåt och 100 år framåt (10 Years Back and 100 Years Forward), featuring live London recordings.
By 2009, the band re-emerged with Folkmusik för folk som inte kan bete sig som folk (Folk Music for Folk Who Can’t Behave Like Folk), featuring the popular single Tinnitus i hjärtat (Tinnitus of the Heart).
In 2010, Christian Gabel joined as drummer, marking a new era that produced Stumfilm (Silent Film, 2010) and Det överexponerade gömstället (The Overexposed Hideout, 2011).
Their 2012 release, Låter som miljarder (Sounds Like Billions), commemorated their 20th anniversary, followed by a festival in Helsingborg where they auctioned old instruments and memorabilia.
Recent Work
In 2014, Bob Hund premiered a new soundtrack for the silent classic Man With a Movie Camera, performed live in Stockholm, Helsinki, Gothenburg, and Malmö.
Their 2016 album, Dödliga Klassiker (Mortal Classics), continued their experimental streak, followed by 0–100 (2019) and Drömmen är en råvara, verkligheten är en raffinerad produkt (Dreams Are a Raw Material, Reality Is a Refined Product) in 2023.
Now signed under Woah Dad! and Adrian Recordings, Bob Hund continues to perform across Europe, maintaining their reputation as one of Sweden’s most innovative rock bands.
