Patrick Ngugi Njoroge is a distinguished Kenyan economist and banker who served as the ninth governor of the Central Bank of Kenya. Born around 1961 in Murang’a, Kenya, Njoroge was influenced by his parents, both educators, which ignited his passion for learning. He pursued his early education at Mangu High School, followed by Strathmore College for his A-levels. He then proceeded to the University of Nairobi, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Economics. Njoroge furthered his studies at Yale University, obtaining a Ph.D. in Economics under notable economists including William Brainard, Jim Tobin, and Robert J. Shiller.
Njoroge’s professional journey began at the Kenyan Ministry of Planning and later at the Ministry of Finance. His career then took a pivotal turn towards international economics at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C., where he held various roles, eventually serving as the advisor to the deputy managing director.
In June 2015, Njoroge was appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya by President Uhuru Kenyatta. His tenure was marked by significant financial reforms, including placing Imperial Bank into receivership in October 2015 and spearheading initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide financial relief to Kenyans. He also served on the United Nations Task Force on Digital Financing of Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting his influence on global economic policies.
A devout Roman Catholic and a numerary member of Opus Dei, Njoroge’s personal life reflects his commitment to faith and integrity. His tenure at the Central Bank concluded in June 2023, leaving behind a legacy of impactful leadership and financial stewardship.
