Belgium vs Iran Preview: Group G Test in LA

Belgium vs Iran brings a crucial Group G match to Los Angeles Stadium as both teams chase their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match kicks off on June 21 at 22:00 EAT for fans in East Africa, which is 12 p.m. local time in Los Angeles. It is Match 39 of the tournament and one of the key fixtures in the second round of Group G games.

Belgium opened with a 1-1 draw against Egypt, a result that left Rudi Garcia’s side with mixed feelings. The Red Devils controlled parts of the match, created chances and eventually found a way back through the impact of Romelu Lukaku, but they could not turn pressure into a winning start.

Iran also began with a draw, sharing the points in a 2-2 match against New Zealand. That result showed attacking resilience, but it also left defensive questions before facing one of Europe’s most experienced tournament teams.

With Belgium, Egypt, Iran and New Zealand all taking something from the first round, Group G remains open. A win in Los Angeles would give either Belgium or Iran a major advantage before the final matchday.

Belgium vs Iran Match Details

Belgium and Iran meet at Los Angeles Stadium, the tournament name for SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The fixture carries pressure for both sides because neither team won its opening match. Belgium expected to take three points against Egypt, but the draw means they now need a stronger performance to avoid entering the final group game under stress.

Iran will feel they missed a chance too. Scoring twice against New Zealand showed quality, but conceding twice stopped them from taking control of the group.

The match should bring a clear contrast. Belgium will likely try to dominate possession, use wide players to stretch Iran and create chances through Kevin De Bruyne’s passing range. Iran may look to stay compact, attack quickly and use direct runs when Belgium leave space.

Group G Table Before Kickoff

Group G is balanced after the first round.

Belgium and Egypt drew 1-1, while Iran and New Zealand drew 2-2. That means every team has one point, although Iran and New Zealand have scored more goals than Belgium and Egypt.

That makes the second round especially important. A win for Belgium would move them to four points and restore confidence after their opening frustration. A win for Iran would put them in a strong position and increase pressure on Belgium before the final group match.

A draw would keep both teams alive, but it would also leave the group tense heading into the last round. In the expanded 48-team format, third-place teams may still progress, but four points are usually far more useful than two.

Belgium Need More Cutting Edge

Belgium’s draw with Egypt showed both promise and concern.

They had periods of control, but their final-third decisions were not sharp enough. Jeremy Doku caused problems with his pace, De Bruyne looked for openings, and Lukaku changed the match after coming on.

The question now is whether Lukaku starts. His physical presence gives Belgium a direct route to goal and forces defenders to stay deeper. If he is fit enough to begin the match, Belgium may have more penalty-area threat than they showed early against Egypt.

Belgium also need better defensive concentration. Egypt found space to score first, and Iran have enough attacking quality to punish similar mistakes.

Garcia’s team cannot afford another slow start. They need tempo, width and cleaner finishing.

Iran Can Hurt Belgium in Transition

Iran showed strong character against New Zealand.

They fell behind but responded, using crosses, movement and pressure to get back into the match. That resilience will matter against Belgium, especially if the game becomes difficult early.

Iran’s best route may come through transitions. Belgium like to push players forward, and that can leave space behind midfield. If Iran win the ball and move quickly, they can create danger before Belgium reset.

Set pieces could also matter. Iran have players who attack crosses well, and Belgium must avoid unnecessary fouls around the box.

The challenge for Iran is balance. They cannot defend too passively for 90 minutes, but they also cannot give Belgium too much room between the lines.

Key Battle: De Bruyne’s Passing vs Iran’s Shape

Belgium vs Iran may be decided by how well Iran contain Kevin De Bruyne.

If De Bruyne gets time to lift his head, he can find runners behind the defense and deliver dangerous balls into the box. Iran must close him quickly, block central lanes and force Belgium into slower wide attacks.

Iran’s midfield discipline will be vital. The spaces between midfield and defense must stay tight, especially when Doku or other Belgian attackers drift inside.

Belgium, meanwhile, need runners around De Bruyne. Passing quality matters, but movement creates the openings. If Belgium are static, Iran can defend the box and frustrate them.

What Belgium Need

Belgium need a complete attacking performance.

They should have more possession, but they must make it count. Faster combinations, more penalty-area presence and sharper movement from wide areas will be essential.

Lukaku’s role could be decisive. If he starts, Belgium can play earlier balls into the box and use his strength to occupy defenders. If he comes from the bench again, Belgium need others to carry the scoring threat.

Defensively, Belgium must stay alert to counters. Iran are dangerous when they can attack space quickly.

What Iran Need

Iran need compact defending and brave transitions.

They must accept that Belgium will likely control long spells, but they cannot simply sit deep and wait. When they win the ball, their first pass must be forward and accurate.

Iran also need confidence from their opening match. Scoring twice at a World Cup is a positive sign, even if the draw was frustrating.

A win over Belgium would be a major result and could put Iran close to the knockout rounds.

Prediction and What to Watch

Belgium enter as favorites because of their squad depth, experience and attacking quality. Iran, however, showed enough against New Zealand to suggest they can make this uncomfortable.

The first goal will shape the match. If Belgium score early, they can control the tempo and force Iran to open up. If Iran score first, Belgium may face another anxious game.

Prediction: Belgium 2-1 Iran.

A Belgium win would reset their campaign and put them in a stronger position before the final match. An Iran win would be one of the biggest Group G statements and could leave Belgium under serious pressure.

For Belgium vs Iran, the stakes are clear: Belgium need authority, while Iran have a chance to turn resilience into a major World Cup result.
