On June 1, 2024, Kampala experienced a transformative moment with the grand opening of Hamz Stadium, formerly known as Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium. This significant event ushered in a new era for Ugandan sports and entertainment, driven by the visionary efforts of young entrepreneur Hamis Kiggundu and his company, Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd, in collaboration with the Ugandan Government.
The Vision Realised: From Concept to Reality
The journey to this grand opening began in 2017, when Hamis Kiggundu initiated the extensive renovation of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium. This Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project transformed the historic stadium into a modern, state-of-the-art facility poised to host numerous sports and entertainment events. The culmination of this ambitious project was acknowledged on April 25, 2024, when President Museveni praised Hamis Kiggundu’s developmental vision and announced a 49-year lease for Ham to manage and recover his investment.
A Night to Remember: The Grand Opening Spectacle
The grand opening on June 1, 2024, was a spectacular affair. The festivities kicked off at 7:00 PM with a breathtaking 10-minute fireworks display that illuminated the Kampala skyline. The stadium, with a capacity of 35,000, was nearly full, and all 40 executive boxes and lounges, priced at 10 million shillings each, were sold out.
An Electric Atmosphere: Sports and Entertainment Extravaganza
The event featured a variety of sports and entertainment activities. URA FC triumphed over Kitara FC with a 3-0 victory in the opening football match, followed by an official ceremony and another 10-minute fireworks display. The evening continued with thrilling performances by top Ugandan artists, including Rema, Eddy Kenzo, Cindy, Bebe Cool, and Alien Skin.
The sports action resumed with SC Villa defeating Express FC 1-0, with both winning teams receiving a 10 million shillings award. In amateur boxing, Zahara Nandawula defeated Flavia Babirye, while in professional boxing, Isaac Zebra Jr emerged victorious over Abas Seguya. A draw match between Golola Moses and Umar Sematta added to the excitement. Additionally, basketball matches between KIU Titans vs. JT Jaguars and Nam Blazers vs. UCU Canons, along with netball matches featuring KCCA, Weyonje, and NIC, entertained the crowd.
A Gathering of Luminaries: VIPs and Celebrities
The grand opening attracted an impressive array of VVIPs, celebrities, and tycoons, including former Vice Presidents Gilbert Bukenya and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, FUFA President Moses Magogo, Vision Group CEO Don Wanyama, ONC boss Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, His Excellency Godfrey Kirumira Kalule, and city tycoon Ahmed Omar Mandela. Stringent security measures ensured the safety of all attendees. Rigorous checks and the presence of security agencies, including the UPDF, maintained order both inside and outside the venue. City access roads within a 2km radius of the stadium were closed to traffic, allowing only VIP access and pedestrian entry.

Emergency medical attention was available throughout the event, ensuring the safety of all attendees. First aid was promptly administered to Muhindo Geoffrey, a spectator who experienced a health issue following Kitara FC’s loss. This level of care impressed all attendees.
