A New Dawn for Ugandan Sports and Entertainment: Grand Opening of Hamz Stadium

Unveiling an Iconic Hub for Sports and Culture in the Heart of Kampala

On June 1, 2024, Kampala experienced a transformative moment with the grand opening of Hamz Stadium, formerly known as Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium. This significant event ushered in a new era for Ugandan sports and entertainment, driven by the visionary efforts of young entrepreneur Hamis Kiggundu and his company, Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd, in collaboration with the Ugandan Government.

The Vision Realised: From Concept to Reality

The journey to this grand opening began in 2017, when Hamis Kiggundu initiated the extensive renovation of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium. This Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project transformed the historic stadium into a modern, state-of-the-art facility poised to host numerous sports and entertainment events. The culmination of this ambitious project was acknowledged on April 25, 2024, when President Museveni praised Hamis Kiggundu’s developmental vision and announced a 49-year lease for Ham to manage and recover his investment.

A Night to Remember: The Grand Opening Spectacle

The grand opening on June 1, 2024, was a spectacular affair. The festivities kicked off at 7:00 PM with a breathtaking 10-minute fireworks display that illuminated the Kampala skyline. The stadium, with a capacity of 35,000, was nearly full, and all 40 executive boxes and lounges, priced at 10 million shillings each, were sold out.

An Electric Atmosphere: Sports and Entertainment Extravaganza

The event featured a variety of sports and entertainment activities. URA FC triumphed over Kitara FC with a 3-0 victory in the opening football match, followed by an official ceremony and another 10-minute fireworks display. The evening continued with thrilling performances by top Ugandan artists, including Rema, Eddy Kenzo, Cindy, Bebe Cool, and Alien Skin.

The sports action resumed with SC Villa defeating Express FC 1-0, with both winning teams receiving a 10 million shillings award. In amateur boxing, Zahara Nandawula defeated Flavia Babirye, while in professional boxing, Isaac Zebra Jr emerged victorious over Abas Seguya. A draw match between Golola Moses and Umar Sematta added to the excitement. Additionally, basketball matches between KIU Titans vs. JT Jaguars and Nam Blazers vs. UCU Canons, along with netball matches featuring KCCA, Weyonje, and NIC, entertained the crowd.

A Gathering of Luminaries: VIPs and Celebrities

The grand opening attracted an impressive array of VVIPs, celebrities, and tycoons, including former Vice Presidents Gilbert Bukenya and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, FUFA President Moses Magogo, Vision Group CEO Don Wanyama, ONC boss Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, His Excellency Godfrey Kirumira Kalule, and city tycoon Ahmed Omar Mandela. These distinguished guests enjoyed complimentary meals while partaking in the festivities.

Security and Organization: Ensuring a Safe Celebration

Stringent security measures ensured the safety of all attendees. Rigorous checks and the presence of security agencies, including the UPDF, maintained order both inside and outside the venue. City access roads within a 2km radius of the stadium were closed to traffic, allowing only VIP access and pedestrian entry.

First-Class Medical Attention: Ensuring Safety and Care

Emergency medical attention was available throughout the event, ensuring the safety of all attendees. First aid was promptly administered to Muhindo Geoffrey, a spectator who experienced a health issue following Kitara FC’s loss. This level of care impressed all attendees.

Culinary Delights for All

A variety of meals and drinks were served to all spectators, courtesy of Ham, highlighting the hospitality and generosity that marked the event.

Ham’s Heartfelt Gratitude: A Vision Fulfilled

Reflecting on the event’s success, Hamis Kiggundu expressed his heartfelt gratitude. “Thanks to everyone, it was such a successful and wonderful grand opening,” he stated. “The stadium is now ready to host sports and other activities. For God and My Country.”

A New Era Begins

The grand opening of Hamz Stadium was more than just an event; it was a celebration of Ugandan culture, talent, and unity. The fusion of sports, music, and fireworks created a magical ambiance that will be remembered for years to come. The event lasted until 5:30 AM on Sunday morning, marking the beginning of a new era for this iconic stadium and reaffirming its place as a hub for sports and entertainment in Uganda.
