WhatsApp Will Let Users Control Who Can Share Their Status Updates

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that could change how you message forever—even if the other person doesn’t have a WhatsApp account. Dubbed the WhatsApp guest chat feature, the update is currently in beta testing and aims to introduce cross-platform messaging with built-in privacy controls.

  • How the WhatsApp Guest Chat Feature Works
  • Why It Matters for WhatsApp Users
  • What to Expect Next

This innovative feature allows you to interact with non-WhatsApp users through a system called guest chats. Rather than requiring recipients to install the app, you can send an invitation link to them. Once they click it, a secure chat interface—similar to WhatsApp Web—will open, allowing private messaging.

How the WhatsApp Guest Chat Feature Works

The new WhatsApp guest chat feature empowers users to:

  • Invite non-users via a link to start a chat.
  • Communicate through a browser-based interface (likely WhatsApp Web).
  • Enable or disable chat interoperability settings.
  • Choose which third-party apps can interact with their WhatsApp.

While guest chats open up new ways to communicate, they’ll come with certain limitations. For example, users will likely be restricted from sending media files, voice notes, or joining group chats in these sessions. However, WhatsApp ensures that end-to-end encryption will still apply, preserving user privacy.

“The name ‘guest chats’ reflects its role—temporary, secure, and independent of a full WhatsApp installation,” one beta report noted.

Why It Matters for WhatsApp Users

The WhatsApp guest chat feature is a significant step toward platform interoperability, especially in light of the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which pushes messaging platforms to open up. WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, is clearly aligning with this trend by giving users more control and flexibility over who they chat with—even if that person doesn’t have the app.

By letting users disable or manage third-party chat access, WhatsApp maintains its strong privacy reputation while still innovating for broader accessibility.

What to Expect Next

  • Full launch of guest chats is expected later in 2025.
  • Group messaging and media sharing may remain exclusive to traditional users.
  • A web-based chat portal for guests is the most likely implementation model.
  • Continued end-to-end encryption will ensure no compromise on security.

The WhatsApp guest chat feature represents a leap in messaging flexibility while staying true to privacy principles. Whether you’re contacting a friend who never installed the app or working with clients across platforms, this update could soon bridge that gap—securely and seamlessly.
