  • Requires at least 600mm of rainfall per season and 6-8 hours of daily sunlight.

Preparation and Planting

  • Early land preparation is crucial to eliminate weeds.
  • Watermelons are propagated from seeds, either directly sown or initially grown in nurseries before transplanting.
  • Seeds germinate within a week, and soil should be enriched with organic manure and fertilizers like DAP during planting.
  • Planting depth should be 2-4 cm with a spacing of 1.5m x 1m.

Maintenance

  • Timely and effective weeding is essential to minimize nutrient competition and boost yield potential.
  • Pests such as cutworms, melon fly, and diseases like powdery mildew and anthracnose need to be managed through foliar sprays and crop rotation.

Harvesting

  • Maturity is indicated by a change in skin color to pale yellow and stem cracking, with an average yield of 20-35 tonnes per acre.

Market Dynamics

  • Watermelons are mainly sold in open-air markets, with a presence in supermarkets, hotels, and institutions.
  • Market prices vary by location, with an average selling price around Kshs 100 per kg.
