Vinod Khosla is an influential Indian-American entrepreneur and venture capitalist with a net worth of $6 billion. He is the founder of Khosla Ventures and a co-founder of Sun Microsystems, which significantly contributed to his wealth.

Controversies

Khosla gained notoriety for a dispute involving Martin’s Beach in central California. In 2008, he purchased 53 acres of land adjacent to the beach for $32 million. The previous owners allowed public access through a trail on the property, but Khosla locked the gate in 2010, cutting off access and sparking a legal battle that continues. In early 2020, California sued him on behalf of the State Lands and Coastal Commissions.

Early Life and Education

Vinod Khosla was born on January 28, 1955, in New Delhi, India. His father, an Indian Army officer, hoped Vinod would join the army. However, Khosla was inspired by technology after reading an article about Intel’s founding. He attended Mount St Mary’s School and later earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IIT Delhi, where he also initiated a computer programming club.

He briefly tried to start a soy milk business in India before moving to the United States, where he earned a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Despite initial rejections, Khosla eventually earned an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business in 1980.

After his MBA, Khosla co-founded Sun Microsystems with Stanford alumnus Scott McNealy in 1982. The company, named after the “Stanford University Network,” became profitable within its first year. Khosla served as CEO before shifting to venture capitalism in 1984. Sun Microsystems went public in 1986 and was later acquired by Oracle Corporation for $7.4 billion in 2010.

Venture Capital:
Khosla joined Kleiner Perkins in 1986, managing technology investments and supporting microfinance initiatives. In 2004, he founded Khosla Ventures, focusing on breakthrough technologies in semiconductors, robotics, and sustainable energy. The firm manages over $15 billion in assets and has supported companies like QuantumScape, LanzaTech, and Impossible Foods.

Personal Life and Philanthropy

Vinod married his childhood sweetheart, Neeru, in 1980, and they have four children. Neeru co-founded the CK-12 Foundation, which enhances access to STEM education materials. Khosla has served on various advisory boards and co-founded The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a Silicon Valley non-profit.
