Dramatic Clash in Turkana: Police Detain KDF Soldiers Over Roadblock Incident
In a significant escalation of tensions between law enforcement and military personnel, police at Lodwar Police Station in Turkana have apprehended four Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers accused of slapping and disarming a traffic officer. The incident, which occurred around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, has sparked widespread attention and raised concerns about inter-agency relations.
The confrontation unfolded at a roadblock where the traffic officer was delayed in removing spikes, just as a KDF water bowser approached. The situation quickly escalated when the driver of the water bowser exited the vehicle, struck the officer, and another soldier seized and cocked the officer’s AK47 assault rifle. The KDF soldiers then left the scene, instructing the disarmed officer to retrieve his weapon at their base in Loturerei camp.
The police were promptly informed about the incident by the officer, Cleophas Makhapila, and launched an operation to locate the water bowser. It was soon found at Moi Garden in Lodwar, a location frequented by KDF for water collection. Upon confrontation, the situation intensified when the driver brandished his rifle, leading to police firing warning shots before the soldiers eventually surrendered.
Despite the arrest, the KDF soldiers did not cooperate in providing their identities and were booked as unknown at the police station. The refusal to move the water bowser to the police station added to the complexity of the situation, with the soldiers’ commander asserting that they would not comply with the police directive.
This incident did not only cause a spectacle but also interfered with nearby court proceedings, drawing crowds and leading to a temporary suspension of activities. Further tension arose when additional KDF officers arrived and surrounded the police station, although the situation was defused following intervention by senior officers from both sides.
The arrested soldiers are now facing charges of robbery with violence, marking a serious allegation that underscores the gravity of the incident. This event highlights the delicate balance of authority and the challenges of inter-service coordination in maintaining law and order. The ongoing investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Turkana Central will likely shed more light on the motivations and broader implications of this confrontation.
