Nairobi, Kenya: The Philippine News Agency reported on Thursday that 92 people have died as a result of a landslide that occurred last week in the southern Philippines.
Since the disaster on February 6 outside of an Apex Mining Co.-owned mining operations area in Mindanao, numerous bodies have been found through search and rescue attempts.
A government organization called the Management of the Dead and Missing reports that 36 people are still missing.
At approximately 7.30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT), a landslide struck a waiting area where workers were seated on two buses.
In a statement, Davao de Oro province administrator Edward Macapili stressed that the incident was “the most serious landslide experienced in the region in the last 10 years.”
He said that the duration of the search and rescue efforts has not yet been determined, adding that the landslide had left up to 50 meters (164 feet) of dirt and debris over several communities.
Macapili reported that 51 individuals are still unaccounted for, and 32 had been rescued but were injured.
It is stated that around 1,100 families have been removed from the affected area.
