Hidden within the lush greenery of Bomet County, the Tenwek Falls is a captivating natural and historical site that blends the beauty of nature with the depth of local legend. Cascading 14 meters down the Nyangores River, one of the main tributaries of the Mara River, the falls are located near the renowned Tenwek Mission Hospital, making them one of the most accessible and rewarding attractions in the region. Best viewed after the March rains, when the water volume surges, Tenwek Falls offers visitors a scenic and rejuvenating escape into nature.
The site’s appeal goes beyond its scenic charm. A small hydroelectric plant, built by missionaries in the 1950s, stands at the falls, symbolizing early innovation and self-sufficiency in the area. The dam walkway provides the best vantage point for photography and observation, while daring locals can often be spotted diving from the power station’s rooftop into the clear plunge pool below — a thrilling sight that captures the fearless spirit of the community.
Beneath the falls are ancient caves, once believed to house the mythical ‘tiondab barak’, translated as the “animal of the sky.” Local folklore tells of strange sounds and sightings within these caves, adding a mysterious air to the already dramatic landscape. For visitors interested in culture and faith, the nearby Tenwek Mission Church, completed in 1937, and Tenwek Mission Hospital, established a year later, provide a meaningful connection to the area’s missionary past. The hospital’s story — from the early service of nurse Trudy Shyrock to the pioneering work of Dr. Ernie Steury in 1959 — remains an integral part of Tenwek’s heritage and community spirit.
Just 8 kilometers north of Bomet Town along the Bomet–Tenwek–Silibwet Road, Tenwek Falls is easy to reach and ideal for a half-day excursion. The site is surrounded by tall indigenous trees, creating a serene environment perfect for photography, picnics, and light nature walks. For guests at Tenwek Guesthouse, trips can be arranged through the World Medical Mission team, and for those extending their journey, the Masai Mara National Reserve lies just two hours south — making Tenwek a perfect stopover before heading into the wild.
More than just a waterfall, Tenwek Falls is a place where history, faith, and legend converge, offering travelers a unique glimpse into both the natural splendor and cultural depth of Kenya’s southern highlands.
