On May 9, 2024, President William Ruto emphasized the importance of mediation for securing sustainable peace in South Sudan. He advocated for inclusive dialogue during the high-level mediation launch at State House, Nairobi, attended by leaders like South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera, and others.
Ruto highlighted the Tumaini Initiative, a comprehensive, home-grown mediation effort involving eight categories of stakeholders to address political instability and conflicts. He praised the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity, the Real-SPLM, and the South Sudan United Front for their progress. He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Pan-African approach of solving African challenges through African solutions, contributing to the “Silencing the Guns in Africa” agenda.
Salva Kiir expressed gratitude to President Ruto for his commitment to peace in South Sudan. He promised that the government would negotiate earnestly to facilitate positive results before the upcoming general elections. Other leaders, such as President Hichilema of Zambia, also encouraged inclusive negotiation for peace and stability.
Lazarus Sumbeiywo, the chief mediator, acknowledged international support and stressed the importance of ongoing consultations for a comprehensive resolution. The mediation will involve continuous engagement to ensure a thorough and inclusive process.
