HOMA BAY, KENYA – June 1, 2025: Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar made history today as she joined Kenyans in celebrating Madaraka Day in Homa Bay, becoming the first foreign head of state to visit the county and participate in the national independence celebrations.
The distinguished guest was officially received by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and welcomed with full honors. Her attendance marks a significant diplomatic milestone, highlighting the growing ties between Kenya and Slovenia.
“Welcoming H.E. President Nataša Pirc Musar of Slovenia ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations. She is the first foreign Head of State to visit Homa Bay. We extend a warm welcome to you, Madam President!” Governor Wanga shared earlier on social media.

Held at Homa Bay Stadium, this year’s Madaraka Day showcased Kenya’s commitment to devolution and regional inclusion, with Homa Bay hosting the event for the first time. President Musar’s presence at the celebrations added an international dimension to the festivities, drawing attention to the county on the global stage.
Her participation in the event also underlines the importance of women leadership globally, as both she and Governor Wanga represent trailblazing figures in their respective countries.
President Musar is expected to hold bilateral talks with Kenyan leaders during her visit, focusing on strengthening cooperation in areas such as climate action, education, innovation, and women’s empowerment.
