Signal, the secure messaging platform known for its end-to-end encryption, has taken a decisive step to shield its users from Microsoft’s controversial Recall feature in Windows 11.
In a May 2025 update, Signal’s desktop app now blocks Recall from capturing screen content, thanks to a newly enabled “Screen Security” setting that leverages DRM-style protections.
What Is Microsoft Recall?
Microsoft Recall is an AI-powered feature for Windows 11 on Copilot+ PCs. It continuously takes screen snapshots in the background, allowing users to search their digital activity history with natural language prompts.
While it aims to improve productivity, Recall has sparked serious privacy concerns due to its ability to capture nearly everything on-screen — from emails and documents to private conversations — without the knowledge or consent of third-party apps.
Even more troubling: Recall currently offers no developer API to opt out, leaving sensitive apps like Signal vulnerable by default.
Signal’s Solution: Screen Security by Default
Signal’s latest update introduces Screen Security as a default setting on Windows 11. This feature:
- Blocks screen capture attempts from Microsoft Recall and similar tools
- Uses DRM-like techniques (similar to Netflix) to black out chats from screenshots
- Keeps private conversations invisible, even if Recall is running in the background
“OS vendors need to ensure developers of apps like Signal always have tools to reject AI systems accessing sensitive information,” said Signal developer Joshua Lund.
Accessibility vs. Privacy: A Balanced Approach
While Screen Security enhances privacy, it can affect users who rely on accessibility tools, such as screen readers. To accommodate this, Signal has made the feature optional:
- Users can disable it via:
Settings > Privacy > Screen Security
This balance allows Signal to protect sensitive content while remaining accessible to all users.
Why It Matters
As AI systems like Microsoft Recall become more integrated into operating systems, user control and app-level privacy protections become essential. Signal’s proactive response is a reminder that digital privacy must evolve alongside AI innovation.
For users concerned about their confidential conversations being captured without consent, Signal now offers an effective safeguard against AI overreach.
