A group of 75 Nobel laureates has sent a powerful letter to world leaders, urging support for the Iranian people in their fight for democracy and freedom. This letter highlights the dire human rights situation in Iran and expresses solidarity with the ongoing democratic uprising.
Human Rights Concerns: The laureates’ letter expresses deep concern over the worsening human rights conditions in Iran, where 80% of the population lives below the poverty line, and the regime executes a citizen every six hours. In May 2023 alone, there were 144 executions, making Iran the country with the highest number of executions per capita.
Global Support: The Nobel laureates join a growing chorus of international support, which includes statements from 117 former world leaders, the majority of the US House of Representatives, and many European parliaments. They endorse Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan, which calls for:
- A secular republic based on freedom and democracy.
- Universal suffrage and free elections.
- A market economy.
- Gender, religious, and ethnic equality.
- A non-nuclear Iran.
- A foreign policy based on peaceful coexistence.
Solidarity with Iranian People: The signatories, prominent individuals from five continents, recognize and support the Iranian people’s four-decade-long struggle for freedom and democracy, rejecting both the ousted Shah’s dictatorship and the ruling clerics. They call for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) to be listed as a terrorist organization by free nations worldwide.
