In 1988-89, he spent a year studying abroad in Brazil as part of an exchange program.

Poetry and Music Career

Williams gained recognition in the New York City café poetry scene during the mid-1990s. In 1996, he won a poetry slam at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, which propelled him further into the public eye. He was featured in the documentary SlamNation about poetry slams, and he began collaborating with prominent artists like Nas, Erykah Badu, and KRS-One.

In 2001, he released his debut album “Amethyst Rock Star”, blending hip-hop, spoken word, and alternative rock. His 2007 album “The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!” was produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and earned significant praise for its experimental sound and daring commentary.

Williams’ music evolved over the years, and his later albums like “Volcanic Sunlight” (2011) and “MartyrLoserKing” (2016) explored different themes and genres. In 2022, he released “Unanimous Goldmine”, the soundtrack to his film Neptune Frost. His spoken word poetry album “Saul Williams Meets Carlos Niño & Friends at Treepeople” was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2025.

Acting and Filmmaking

Williams made his film debut in 1998 as the lead character in Slam, a drama about a young poet. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and helped establish Williams as an actor. He continued to land roles in films such as K-PAX (2001) alongside Kevin Spacey, and in the HBO film Lackawanna Blues (2005).

In 2014, Williams made his Broadway debut in Tupac Shakur’s musical Holler If Ya Hear Me. He later starred in the French-Senegalese film Today (2012) and received praise for his portrayal of Oberon in a modern-day version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2017).

In 2020, he starred in Akilla’s Escape, a crime drama that earned him a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Actor. In 2021, Williams co-directed the Afrofuturist film Neptune Frost, which he also wrote, focusing on the relationship between an intersex hacker and a miner in Burundi.

Williams continues to work in both film and television, including starring in Zoë Kravitz’s 2024 thriller Blink Twice and Ryan Coogler’s 2025 period vampire film Sinners.

Personal Life

Saul Williams identifies as queer and has spoken openly about his personal life and his experiences as a vegan. He has previously been romantically involved with Fatima Robinson and Persia White, and he has a son with Robinson. Williams is currently married to Anisia Uzeyman, a Rwandan actress, playwright, and filmmaker.
