Nairobi, June 25, 2024 – In response to growing online conversations concerning data privacy, Safaricom PLC has issued a statement reassuring its commitment to safeguarding customer information in accordance with Kenya’s data protection laws.

The telecom giant, which is at the forefront of Kenya’s telecommunications industry, emphasized that it does not share any customer data unless explicitly mandated by a court order. This clarification comes amidst swirling discussions on social media and various online platforms regarding privacy concerns raised by users and advocacy groups.

“Safaricom notes the online conversations on data privacy. We respect our customers’ privacy and adhere strictly to the country’s data protection laws,” the statement read. It further confirmed that, “On the current issue in discussion, we confirm that we have not received any court order requiring us to share customer information with any government agency.”

The statement from Safaricom highlights its stringent practices in handling customer data, a move that appears to aim at bolstering consumer confidence in their operations. The policy is a cornerstone in a country where data protection and privacy have taken center stage in light of recent advancements in digital technology and governance.

Data privacy has been a hot topic globally, with many consumers increasingly concerned about how companies handle their personal information. In Kenya, the enactment of data protection legislation was seen as a critical step towards giving individuals more control over their personal data while imposing corresponding obligations on entities like Safaricom.

By reiterating their compliance with these legal provisions, Safaricom seeks to clear any uncertainties regarding their data handling practices. The telecom provider’s proactive approach in addressing these concerns reflects its ongoing commitment to transparency and ethical practices in customer data management.

As digital communication continues to evolve, Safaricom’s reaffirmation serves as a reminder of the importance of robust data protection frameworks to ensure that the rights of users are preserved in an increasingly connected world.
