The Retirement Benefits (Deputy President and Designated State Officers) Act provides for the retirement benefits of a Deputy President and a retired Vice President in Kenya. These benefits apply for the lifetime of the former office holder.

  • 4. Fuel Allowance
  • 5. Medical and Hospital Cover
  • 6. Additional Benefits

1. Monthly Pension

A retired Deputy President or retired Vice President shall receive:
✔ A monthly pension equal to 80% (KES 589,050.40) of the last monthly salary while in office.


2. Lump Sum Retirement Payment

✔ A one-time lump sum payment equal to one year’s salary for each term served in office.

3. Official Vehicles

A retired Deputy President or Vice President shall receive:
✔ Two saloon vehicles (engine capacity not exceeding 2000cc) – replaceable every four years.
✔ One four-wheel drive vehicle (engine capacity not exceeding 3000cc) – replaceable every four years.


4. Fuel Allowance

✔ A fuel allowance equal to 15% (KES 110,446.95) of the current monthly salary of the office holder.

5. Medical and Hospital Cover

✔ Full medical and hospital cover for both local and overseas treatment.
✔ The insurance cover applies to the Deputy President (or retired Vice President) and their spouse.
✔ The medical cover must be from a reputable insurance company.


6. Additional Benefits

According to the Third Schedule of the Act, a retired Deputy President or Vice President is entitled to:

(i) Personal Staff

✔ Two drivers
✔ One personal assistant
✔ One accountant
✔ One secretary
✔ Two housekeepers
✔ Two senior support staff
✔ Two cooks
✔ Two gardeners
✔ Two cleaners

(ii) Security and Travel Privileges

✔ Armed security guards, available upon request.
✔ Diplomatic passports for both the Deputy President (or retired Vice President) and their spouse.
✔ Access to VIP Lounge II at all airports within Kenya.

(iii) Office Facilities

✔ A fully equipped office with office equipment.
✔ Maintenance expenses for vehicles provided under the Act.
