Who Qualifies for Presidential Retirement Benefits?

The following individuals qualify for Presidential Retirement Benefits:

✔ A retired President of Kenya.
✔ The surviving spouse of a retired President.
✔ The surviving spouse of a President who dies while in office.

1. Lump Sum Payment

💰 A one-time payment equal to one year’s salary for each term served as President.


2. Monthly Pension

✔ A monthly pension equal to 80% of the current salary of the sitting President.
✔ This currently amounts to KES 693,000 per month.

3. Entertainment Allowance

✔ A retired President receives 15% of the current President’s monthly salary.
✔ Amount: KES 129,937.50 per month.


4. Housing Allowance

✔ 23% of the current President’s monthly salary for housing.
✔ Amount: KES 199,237.50 per month.
✔ Covers both urban and rural residences.


5. Office Space

✔ Office space of up to 1,000 square metres.
✔ Fully furnished with office machines, equipment, and supplies.
✔ Government covers maintenance costs.

6. Official Vehicles

✔ Two new saloon cars, engine capacity not exceeding 3000cc, replaced every 3 years.
✔ Two four-wheel drive vehicles, engine capacity at least 3400cc, replaced every 3 years.


7. Fuel Allowance

✔ 15% of the current President’s salary.
✔ Amount: KES 129,937.50 per month.


8. Utility Allowance

✔ Covers electricity, water, and telephone bills.
✔ 23% of the current President’s salary.
✔ Amount: KES 199,237.50 per month.


9. Medical Cover

✔ Full medical and hospital cover for:

  • The retired President.
  • Spouse.
  • Children under 18 years.
    ✔ Includes local and overseas treatment with a reputable insurance company.

10. Additional Benefits

A retired President is entitled to:

✔ Two personal assistants.
✔ Four secretaries.
✔ Four messengers.
✔ Four drivers.
✔ Security personnel, including:

  • Personal security & escort.
  • Security at urban and rural residences.
    ✔ Four cooks.
    ✔ Four housekeepers.
    ✔ Four gardeners.
    ✔ Four laundry persons.
    ✔ Four house cleaners.
    ✔ Office maintenance.
    ✔ Vehicle maintenance expenses.
    ✔ A diplomatic passport for the President and spouse.
    ✔ Local travel allowance.
    ✔ International travel allowance:
  • Up to four trips per year, each lasting up to two weeks.
    ✔ Access to V.I.P. lounges at all airports in Kenya.

✔ Upon their death, a retired President shall receive a State funeral.
