A birth certificate is essential for various services in Kenya, including applying for a National ID, passport, visas, and registering for national exams. If you’ve lost your birth certificate, you can replace it through either a physical application or an online application via the eCitizen platform.
1. Physical Application
Documents Required:
- A copy of the birth notification or birth certificate. If you don’t have these, visit your county’s civil registry for assistance.
- Original ID/Passport of both parents.
- Copies of parents’ ID or Passport. If one parent is deceased, a death certificate will be required.
Procedure:
- Visit the nearest Huduma Centre or civil registration office with a copy of the birth notification.
- For those born in Nairobi: Go to the Registration of Births and Deaths office at Bishop’s Plaza, Opposite Milimani Court, or any Huduma Centre.
- For those born outside Nairobi: Visit Hass Plaza, 4th Floor, Lower Hill Road, Nairobi.
- Fill out the application form (Form B1) provided by the registration officer and submit it along with the required documents.
- Pay the prescribed fee, typically between Kshs 50-180.
- Wait for notification when your birth certificate is ready for collection.
2. Online Application
Procedure:
- Log in to the eCitizen portal.
- Navigate to the Civil Registration Department and select Get Service.
- Choose Make Application, then select Birth Certificate.
- Follow the instructions and make the required payment, around Kshs 180, via Mpesa.
- Confirm your payment and submit your application.
- Download and print the application invoice, then submit a copy of the invoice to the Civil Registration Department at ACK Bishop House on Bishop’s Road, off Ngong Road.
Both application methods are designed to make it convenient to replace a lost birth certificate in Kenya.
