How to Register a Business Name in Uganda

Starting a business in Uganda begins with ensuring that your enterprise is legally recognized. The first and most important step is to register your business name through the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). This process grants you legal ownership of your business identity and enables you to operate formally. Here’s a detailed guide on how to register a business name in Uganda.

1. Choose and Reserve Your Business Name

Start by selecting at least three preferred business name options. These names should reflect the nature of your business and must not be similar to existing registered names. Submit them to URSB for a name search. If one of your proposed names is available, it will be reserved for a period of 30 days.

2. Prepare the Required Documentation

To proceed with the registration, gather the following documents:

  • A clear description of the business activities or objectives.
  • Full names and contact details of the proprietor(s).
  • Valid identification documents such as a national ID or passport.
  • Physical and postal address of the business.

3. Submit Your Application

You can submit your application either online through the URSB business registration system or physically by visiting any URSB office across the country. Ensure that your documents are accurate and complete to avoid delays.

4. Pay the Registration Fee

The standard fee for registering a business name is UGX 24,000. Payment can be made through mobile money, bank deposit, or any authorized method provided by URSB. Always keep a copy of your payment receipt.

5. Receive Your Business Name Certificate

Once your application has been reviewed and approved, URSB will issue a Certificate of Registration for your business name. This certificate serves as official proof of your business name registration and gives you the legal right to operate under that name.

6. Post-Registration Requirements

After successfully registering your business name, consider the following next steps:

  • Apply for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for tax compliance.
  • Obtain any necessary local government licenses depending on your business type and location.
  • Keep URSB updated with any changes to your business details.

Conclusion

To register a business name in Uganda, you must follow a straightforward legal process that ensures your venture is recognized and protected. With just a small fee and the right documents, you can secure your business identity and unlock opportunities for formal operation, funding, and growth.
