Rally de Portugal, one of the most iconic events on the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar, has officially secured its place in the championship until 2028, following a spectacular 2025 edition that captivated fans and reinforced the rally’s enduring global appeal.
The Vodafone Rally de Portugal has been renewed for an additional three years, thanks to the combined efforts of the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) and WRC Promoter GmbH, solidifying its status as a motorsport spectacle deeply embedded in the sport’s DNA.
“This is great news for everyone—local governments, fans, and the economy,” said ACP President Carlos Barbosa. “WRC Promoter’s confidence is vital, and we’re proud to keep pushing this incredible rally forward.”
A Historic Rally Loved by Generations
Since debuting as a founding round of the inaugural WRC season in 1973, Rally de Portugal has built a legendary reputation. Despite a brief hiatus from 2002 to 2006, the event returned stronger than ever, now based in Matosinhos in Portugal’s northwestern region.
Famed for its challenging gravel stages such as Fafe and Arganil, the rally tests drivers’ grit and skill while attracting a sea of passionate fans year after year.
“Just look at the atmosphere in Fafe—it’s electric,” said Simon Larkin, Senior Events Director at WRC Promoter. “This rally is a flagship event, not only in sporting terms but also for promotion and spectator value.”
Why FIA Keeps Betting on Portugal
The decision to retain Rally de Portugal in the WRC calendar stems from several compelling factors:
- Massive fan engagement and passionate motorsport culture
- Strong collaboration among municipalities, tourism bodies, and ACP
- A proven track record of smooth event delivery
- Economic impact from thousands of attendees and global exposure
Portugal’s loyal motorsport community, exceptional event organization, and scenic but demanding stages make it a must-keep fixture for the FIA.
Unified Leadership Drives Longevity
The success behind the scenes is equally vital. Carlos Barbosa has been instrumental in aligning regional authorities, local leaders, and international organizers to ensure the rally continues to thrive.
“It’s a team effort involving many stakeholders,” Larkin added. “Barbosa’s leadership ensures everything runs seamlessly—and it’s why Rally de Portugal remains one of the WRC’s favorite stops.”
A Rally That Transcends Sport
Rally de Portugal is more than motorsport. It’s a cultural phenomenon, a driver of economic activity, and a unifying national event that brings locals and international fans together for one thrilling spectacle.
With the FIA’s backing secured through 2028, fans can look forward to more unforgettable moments on the Portuguese gravel roads, where passion meets performance.
From dust to glory, Rally de Portugal continues to deliver.
