Qatar Sports Club (Qatar SC) (Arabic: نادي قطر الرياضي), nicknamed The King, is a multi-sports institution based in Doha, Qatar. Best known for its football team, the club competes in the Qatar Stars League (QSL), the country’s top division. Established in 1960, it plays home matches at the Suheim bin Hamad Stadium, which has a capacity of 13,000.
The club’s current chairman is Sheikh Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani, with Spanish manager Tintín Márquez serving as head coach for the 2025–26 season.
History
Founding and Early Years (1960–1980)
Qatar SC was formed through the merger of Al-Oruba and Al-Nasour in 1960, adopting the name Al-Esteqlal in 1972. The club immediately made an impact, winning the first official Q-League title in 1972–73.
In 1974, Al Sadd SC controversially signed coach Hassan Othman along with 14 key players, including stars Hassan Mattar and Mubarak Anber. Despite the setback, Al-Esteqlal won another league title in 1976–77, cementing its place among Qatar’s leading clubs.
Transition to Qatar SC (1981–present)
In 1981, the club was officially renamed Qatar Sports Club (Qatar SC). The following decades saw mixed results, with periods of decline as Al Sadd, Al Arabi, and Al Rayyan dominated Qatari football.
Qatar SC resurged in the early 2000s, winning the Qatar Crown Prince Cup in 2002 and the Qatar Stars League in 2002–03. They added another Crown Prince Cup in 2009. After relegation in 2015–16, Qatar SC quickly returned to the top flight, where it remains today.
