Born in 1960 in Nyamira Division (formerly part of Kisii District), Mogeni has dedicated his professional life to law, governance, and public accountability.

Early Life and Educational Background

Okong’o Mogeni began his education in local primary schools within Nyamira County, completing his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 1975. He joined Kabianga High School for his O-Level studies from 1976 to 1979 and proceeded to the same school’s A-Level section between 1980 and 1981, where he excelled in arts and humanities subjects.

In 1989, Mogeni enrolled at the University of Nairobi, pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. He graduated in 1993 and later attended the Kenya School of Law in 1994, where he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice before being admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya the same year.

To further his education, Mogeni joined the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in 2013, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Governance in 2014, reinforcing his expertise in public administration.

Professional Career

Upon admission to the Bar in 1994, Okong’o Mogeni began his legal career at a Nairobi-based law firm, specializing in civil, criminal, and constitutional litigation. His dedication to justice quickly earned him national recognition.

In 1998, he established his own practice, Mogeni & Company Advocates, which became one of the most reputable law firms in Western Kenya, specializing in constitutional law, human rights, and governance issues.

Between 2006 and 2008, he served as the Chairman of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Advisory Board, providing strategic direction in Kenya’s fight against corruption.

In 2007, he was elected President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), a position he held until 2010. During his tenure, he championed judicial reforms, constitutional development, and the rule of law, playing an influential role in the discussions leading to the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.

Mogeni’s commitment to public integrity extended beyond law. From 2010 to 2013, he served on the Media Council of Kenya, helping shape ethical journalism standards and media policy frameworks.

In 2012, his contribution to the legal profession was recognized when he was conferred the prestigious title of Senior Counsel (SC)—an honour reserved for distinguished advocates with exemplary service and integrity.

Political Career

Okong’o Mogeni transitioned into active politics in 2017, contesting and winning the Nyamira County Senate seat on an ODM ticket. His legal experience positioned him as a key voice in the Senate, where he chaired the Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights Committee during his first term (2017–2022).

In August 2022, Mogeni was re-elected for a second term, continuing to chair the same committee in the 13th Parliament (2022–present). His leadership has been pivotal in advancing legal reforms, defending devolution, and pushing for Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) restructuring ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Mogeni also sits in several other parliamentary committees, including the County Public Accounts Committee, where he has actively supported financial transparency and oversight in county governments.

His eloquence, experience, and principled leadership have earned him respect across the political divide, making him one of Kenya’s most influential legal minds in politics.

Net Worth and Benefits

Although Okong’o Mogeni’s exact net worth remains undisclosed, his wealth primarily stems from his law practice, public service, and Senate remuneration.
