Oburu Oginga Appointed Acting ODM Party Leader Following Raila’s Passing

Oburu Ng’ong’a Oginga (born October 15, 1943) is a Kenyan politician, economist, and long-serving public servant. He is currently the Senator for Siaya County, a position he assumed after winning the 2022 general elections on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

A veteran of Kenyan politics and an elder statesman of the Odinga family, Oburu has served the nation for more than three decades, both in Parliament and in regional legislative bodies such as the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA). His career reflects a lifetime of dedication to governance, financial policy, and Pan-African cooperation.

Early Life and Education

Oburu Oginga was born on October 15, 1943, in Kenya’s Nyanza region, into one of the country’s most influential political families. He is the second-born son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President, and Mary Juma Odinga.

Growing up in a family deeply involved in the struggle for Kenya’s independence, Oburu was exposed early to politics and leadership. His father’s legacy as a liberation leader and his mother’s community service ethos shaped his lifelong interest in public affairs.

He pursued his education both in Kenya and abroad, specializing in economics and public administration, which laid the foundation for his later work in finance and governance.

Political Career

Oburu Oginga’s political journey began in the early 1990s when he entered active politics following Kenya’s return to multiparty democracy. In 1994, he was elected Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency, succeeding his late father.

He served as MP for Bondo from 1994 to 2017, spanning over two decades. During this period, he gained a reputation as a firm but pragmatic leader committed to regional development and financial accountability.

In 2008, under President Mwai Kibaki’s Grand Coalition Government, Oburu was appointed Assistant Minister for Finance. In this role, he worked closely with technocrats and legislators to advance fiscal reforms, improve government expenditure oversight, and strengthen Kenya’s budgetary institutions.

After his parliamentary tenure, he transitioned to regional politics. On December 11, 2017, Oburu was nominated and approved by the Kenyan Senate to represent the country at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), based in Arusha, Tanzania. He served there until 2022, contributing to legislation promoting regional integration and economic cooperation among East African Community (EAC) member states.

In August 2022, he successfully contested the Siaya County Senatorial seat, succeeding James Orengo, who had been elected Governor. His election cemented his status as a senior figure in ODM and a respected voice in national politics.

Authorship and Publications

In November 2021, Oburu launched his autobiography titled “In the Shadow of My Father.”
The memoir, co-authored with Kenyan historiographer Bethuel Oduo, provides an intimate look into his life — from growing up as Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s son to navigating the complexities of Kenya’s political arena.

The book reflects on his family’s influence, political struggles, and his own contributions to Kenya’s democratic growth.

Family and Personal Life

Oburu Oginga is part of the Odinga political dynasty, one of the most prominent families in Kenya. He is the elder brother of the late Raila Amollo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and longtime opposition leader.

He is also brother to Ruth Odinga, who served as the Deputy Governor of Kisumu County (2013–2017). Their late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, remains an iconic figure in Kenya’s independence history, remembered as the country’s first Vice President and a strong advocate for social justice and democracy.

Oburu’s family influence has extended through generations, with members contributing to politics, business, and community service.

Legacy and Influence

Throughout his political career, Oburu Oginga has been recognized as a pillar of the ODM party, providing guidance and continuity within Kenya’s shifting political landscape. He has been instrumental in shaping fiscal policy debates and strengthening relations between Kenya and other East African nations.

His calm demeanor, institutional experience, and historical perspective make him a respected voice in Kenya’s Senate. For many, Oburu represents the enduring spirit of public service and resilient leadership that has defined the Odinga family for decades.
