Nyandarua Nurses Strike Disrupts Health Services

Nyandarua nurses strike has disrupted public health services after nurses and midwives downed their tools over failure to honour a return-to-work formula. The industrial action, led by the Kenya National Union of Nurses, has paralysed operations in public health facilities across Laikipia County.

  • Why This Matters

The strike follows a prolonged standoff between union officials and the county government over unmet agreements, with healthcare workers insisting they will not resume duty until all grievances are fully addressed.

Background of the Nyandarua Nurses Strike

The Nyandarua nurses strike stems from the county government’s failure to implement a 16-point return-to-work formula agreed upon earlier. Union leaders say the agreement was meant to resolve long-standing human resource and welfare issues affecting nurses and midwives.

Officials from the Kenya National Union of Nurses, led by chairperson Peter Ndimba and branch secretary Daniel Mungai, argue that the county has ignored critical commitments outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding.

Key Issues Behind the Nyandarua Nurses Strike

The striking nurses have outlined several grievances that have fueled the industrial action.

These include delayed promotions and confirmations for staff, which have stalled career progression for many healthcare workers. Additionally, the union cites severe staff shortages that continue to strain existing personnel and compromise service delivery.

Unpaid salary arrears and concerns over medical cover have also heightened tensions. Nurses have further accused the county of failing to implement the 17-tier grading structure, which is meant to standardize salaries and job classifications.

Other concerns include denial of leave and refusal to approve training courses, which affects professional development and morale within the workforce.

Protests in Nyahururu

Nurses staged peaceful demonstrations in Nyahururu, chanting slogans and carrying placards to highlight their frustrations. The protests signaled growing discontent among healthcare workers who feel neglected despite their critical role in the health system.

The demonstrations remained orderly but underscored the urgency of the situation, especially as essential services remain stalled.

Impact on Health Services

The Nyandarua nurses strike has had an immediate and significant impact on public healthcare delivery. Hospitals and clinics across Laikipia County are currently operating at minimal capacity or have halted services entirely.

Patients who rely on public facilities now face delays, limited access to care, and increased pressure on remaining medical staff. The situation risks escalating into a public health crisis if the strike persists.

County Government Response

Laikipia County officials have acknowledged the concerns but cite financial constraints as a major challenge in implementing all agreed reforms.

Dr. Albert Wagura Taiti, the County Executive Committee Member for Health Services, stated that the administration has begun addressing some issues. He noted that several health workers have already received confirmation letters for permanent and pensionable terms.

However, he emphasized that resolving all human resource matters will take time due to budget limitations.

Standoff Continues

Union officials have maintained a firm stance, insisting that nurses will not return to work until the county fully implements the agreed return-to-work formula.

They have also criticized senior county officials, including Governor Joshua Irungu’s administration, for failing to prioritize healthcare workers’ welfare.

Why This Matters

The Nyandarua nurses strike highlights persistent systemic challenges within Kenya’s devolved health sector. Staffing shortages, delayed payments, and policy implementation gaps continue to undermine service delivery.

If unresolved, such disputes could erode public trust in healthcare systems and place vulnerable populations at greater risk.
