Nestled at the northern frontier of Vihiga County, the Mudete Tea Factory is a prized jewel of Kenya’s tea country and the largest tea factory in Western Kenya. Located just 11 km from Majengo Junction along the scenic C38 Gisambai–Mudete Road, this tea haven lies at the junction with Stendi-Kisa–Cheptiret Road, a route that winds gracefully from Ulumbi to Kakamega Forest through Chavakali and Kaimosi. The factory serves as the lifeline for over 13,500 smallholder tea farmers across Sabatia, Hamisi, Shinyalu, Ikholomani, and Vihiga, forming the backbone of the local agrarian economy.
A visit to Mudete offers much more than a glimpse into tea production — it is an immersive journey through Vihiga’s lush green hills. The surrounding farmlands are a tapestry of neatly trimmed tea bushes set against panoramic backdrops of the Nandi Escarpment to the east, Lake Victoria glimmering in the south, and Mount Elgon towering to the north. Guests can tour the factory to learn about the tea processing stages, from withering and rolling to fermentation, drying, and grading. Beyond its economic significance, Mudete represents a blend of culture, agriculture, and sustainability, offering tea enthusiasts an unforgettable rural Kenyan experience.
