The Moi University Pension Scheme (MUPS) was established on 1st July 1991 to provide retirement benefits to employees of Moi University. Initially designed as a Defined Benefit (DB) Scheme, the structure guaranteed fixed benefits regardless of investment performance. This model helped attract and retain qualified university staff.
However, due to rising costs and financial limitations, the scheme transitioned to a Defined Contribution (DC) model with a hybrid underpin. This new structure became effective on 1st January 2005, with contribution rates set at 15% by the employer and 7% by the employee, allowing the scheme to remain sustainable while continuing to provide competitive pension benefits.
