Reporting Date for First-Year Students Remains as Scheduled

In a statement issued by the university’s management, Moi University confirmed that the reporting date for first-year students will take place on the same day, Thursday, August 21, 2025, at both the Main Campus in Eldoret and other respective campuses. This comes after concerns raised by many prospective students and parents about the impact of the ongoing strike on the institution’s operations.

“Moi University wishes to reassure all stakeholders that reporting by first-year students for the 2025/2026 academic year will proceed as scheduled,” the notice read.

The Impact of the Lecturers’ Strike

The lecturers initiated the strike on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, after ongoing concerns were raised regarding the unfulfilled agreements between the university management and the University Academic Staff Union (UASU). Among the lecturers’ demands were:

  • Payment of June and July 2025 salaries in line with the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Full implementation of the Return-To-Work Formula signed in November 2024.
  • Compliance with the clauses on staff review, promotion, and retirement age as outlined in the 2021–2025 National CBA.
  • Upholding fundamental workers’ rights under Article 41 and Chapter 4 of the Constitution.

Lecturers’ Strike: A Timeline and Demands

The lecturers had issued a seven-day strike notice on August 12, 2025, and despite the university’s engagement with UASU leadership, the strike went ahead as planned. The issues raised by UASU are primarily focused on unfulfilled promises and staff welfare concerns.

On August 14, 2025, the university acknowledged the receipt of the strike notice and affirmed that discussions with UASU and relevant government bodies were underway. The management also reiterated their commitment to resolving the issues through constructive dialogue with all parties involved.

What the Strike Means for Students and Parents

While the lecturers’ strike has certainly raised concerns, Moi University emphasized that it would not affect the commencement of the academic year for first-year students. The administration has urged parents and guardians to facilitate their children’s reporting to campus as planned.

Other Key Updates from Moi University

In addition to the strike, Moi University has also implemented several other changes:

  • Revised hostel fees for the 2025/2026 academic year, ensuring transparency and fairness in accommodation pricing.
  • Curfew hours for students, aimed at maintaining order and discipline across campuses.

These updates highlight the ongoing efforts by Moi University to improve the overall experience for students while navigating challenges like the lecturers’ strike.

Conclusion:

Despite the lecturers’ strike, Moi University is moving forward with its academic calendar as planned. The first-year students will begin their 2025/2026 academic year without disruption, ensuring that the university’s operations continue smoothly. The management’s commitment to dialogue and resolution with UASU gives hope for a swift resolution to the current issues, ensuring that Moi University remains a leading institution in Kenya’s higher education sector.
