Microsoft is reintroducing a long-lost feature to its flagship OS: Windows 11 animated wallpapers. After nearly two decades, users can once again set looping videos as their desktop backgrounds. The return of this feature, first seen in Windows Vista’s DreamScene, signals Microsoft’s renewed focus on personalization and immersive desktop experiences.
Unlike its resource-heavy predecessor, the new system leverages modern GPUs and efficient video decoding. This makes Windows 11 animated wallpapers practical, smooth, and far less taxing on performance.
The Return of DreamScene
Back in 2007, Microsoft launched DreamScene with Windows Vista Ultimate. It allowed users to set video backgrounds, but the feature quickly faded. Heavy CPU usage, limited adoption, and performance issues made it impractical for most systems of the time.
Fast forward 18 years, and DreamScene is making a comeback under a new name and improved technology. The Windows 11 version is designed to run seamlessly, taking advantage of today’s hardware advancements to avoid the pitfalls of the past.
How Video Wallpapers Work in Windows 11
The animated wallpaper feature is currently hidden in Windows 11 Insider Preview build 26×20.6690. It can be unlocked through an experimental feature flag (ID 57645315).
Once enabled, the option integrates directly into the Settings > Personalization > Background menu. Users can select supported video formats—including MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, WMV, M4V, and WebM—just as easily as they pick static images today.
The videos then play in a continuous loop whenever the desktop is visible, creating a more dynamic and engaging workspace. At the moment, the feature applies only to desktop backgrounds; the lock screen is not yet supported.
No Third-Party Apps Required
Until now, Windows users who wanted animated wallpapers relied on third-party apps like Wallpaper Engine or DeskScapes. With this update, Microsoft eliminates the need for external tools by building the feature natively into the OS.
This integration ensures better stability, smoother performance, and an experience that feels fully part of Windows.
Release Outlook
Currently, the feature is limited to Insider builds. Microsoft has not announced a public release date, but its presence suggests that Windows 11 animated wallpapers may arrive in a future stable update later this year.
By reviving DreamScene in a modern, optimized form, Microsoft is blending nostalgia with practicality, giving users more ways to personalize their desktops.
