Mashemeji Derby 2025 Heads to Homa Bay as Gor Mahia Shifts Venue
In a historic first, the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby 2025 between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will take place outside Nairobi, as Gor Mahia officially confirms the new date and venue.
Originally scheduled for May 11 at Kasarani Stadium, the clash faced delays after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) prohibited the use of the facility due to ongoing upgrades in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship. Nyayo Stadium is also unavailable due to renovations, while Ulinzi Complex was ruled out for being too small and risked hosting the game without fans.
With limited options in Nairobi, Gor Mahia has made a bold move to shift the Mashemeji Derby 2025 to Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay. The match is now set for June 2 at 3:00 PM.
Why Homa Bay?
Homa Bay holds special significance for Gor Mahia, as the region is widely considered the spiritual home of the club. Hosting AFC Leopards at Raila Odinga Stadium offers a symbolic return to their roots, which could boost morale and fan turnout as the club eyes its 22nd league title.
Title Race Intensifies
Gor Mahia currently sits second on the league table with 54 points and three matches to play, trailing leaders Kenya Police by seven points. The pressure is on, as Kenya Police, with two matches remaining, could seal the title by beating Shabana on June 14.
Victory in the Mashemeji Derby is critical for K’Ogalo, not just for bragging rights but to keep their championship hopes alive.
