History of Mang’u High School

Mang’u High School’s roots go back to 1925 when it was first established as a Catholic mission school by Dutch priest Michael Joseph Witte of the Holy Ghost Fathers (Spiritans). Initially located at Kabaa, the school relocated to Mang’u in 1939. Under the leadership of the first African principal, Raphael J. Njoroge, the school expanded its infrastructure and became a national institution known for its academic excellence.

The school also pioneered the introduction of aviation as an examinable subject in Kenya, with the help of the Marianist Brothers. In 1972, the school moved to its current 214-acre site, six kilometers from Thika Town, along the Thika–Nairobi Highway.

Mang’u High School has produced numerous influential alumni, including Kenya’s third President, the late Mwai Kibaki, former Vice Presidents Moody Awori and the late Prof. George Saitoti, and prominent cabinet ministers such as the late John Michuki and Tom Mboya.
