Malcolm-Jamal Warner (August 18, 1970 – July 20, 2025) was an American actor, musician, and poet. He rose to fame as Theodore “Theo” Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show (1984–1992), which earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 1986. Warner later starred in Malcolm & Eddie (1996–2000), Reed Between the Lines (2011, 2015), Suits (2016–2017), and as Dr. AJ “The Raptor” Austin in The Resident (2018–2023).
He also pursued directing, music, and spoken word poetry, earning a Grammy Award in 2015 for Best Traditional R&B Performance with the Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway.
Warner died at age 54 in July 2025 after drowning off the coast of Limón Province, Costa Rica.
Early life
Warner was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on August 18, 1970, and raised in Los Angeles. His mother named him after Malcolm X and jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal. Showing early interest in performing arts, he enrolled in acting schools and later graduated from the Professional Children’s School in New York City.
Career
Acting
Warner began acting in the early 1980s with guest appearances on Matt Houston, Fame, and Call to Glory. In 1984, he won the role of Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, which ran for eight seasons and became one of the most influential sitcoms in television history.
Afterward, Warner starred in Here and Now (1992–1993), hosted CBS Storybreak (1993–1994), and appeared in television films including Drop Zone (1994), Tyson (1995), and The Tuskegee Airmen (1995). He voiced The Producer in The Magic School Bus (1994–1997).
From 1996 to 2000, he co-starred with Eddie Griffin in the sitcom Malcolm & Eddie. He went on to appear in Jeremiah (2002–2004), Listen Up (2004–2005), and Community (2011–2012). Later roles included American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson (2016), Suits (2016–2017), Sneaky Pete (2017–2019), and The Resident (2018–2023).
Directing
Warner directed music videos for artists such as New Edition and Special Ed, and episodes of shows including The Cosby Show, Kenan & Kel, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also created the educational video Time Out: The Truth About HIV, AIDS, and You (1992).
Music and poetry
As a musician and spoken word artist, Warner released The Miles Long Mixtape (2003), Love & Other Social Issues (2007), Selfless (2015), and Hiding in Plain View (2022), which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.
In 2015, he shared a Grammy Award for “Jesus Children of America,” recorded with the Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway.
Podcasting
In 2024, Warner co-founded the podcast Not All Hood (NAH), focusing on the experiences of Black Americans.
Personal life
Warner was known for his private personal life. He had relationships with actress Michelle Thomas until her death in 1998, actress Karen Malina White for over seven years, and actress Regina King from 2011 to 2013. He later married in 2017 and had one daughter, though he kept their identities private.
Death
On July 20, 2025, Warner drowned at Playa Cocles, Limón Province, Costa Rica. He was caught in a strong current while in the ocean with a small group. Despite rescue attempts and CPR, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Costa Rican Red Cross confirmed the cause of death as accidental drowning.
Tributes poured in from co-stars including Bill Cosby, Karen Malina White, Eddie Griffin, Raven-Symoné, and Keshia Knight Pulliam. His mother, Pamela Warner, announced plans for a memorial and pledged to continue his legacy through arts education and youth mentorship.
