    • 5. Use Fresh Fuel
  • Additional Tips for Motor Longevity

Part 1: Cleaning and Maintaining the Motor After Outings

1. Flush the Engine After Each Outing

  • Attach a garden hose to flushing earmuffs or the motor’s built-in flushing mount.
  • Turn on the water and start the engine (keep it out of gear). This flushes out debris and salt.

2. Check the Water Pump Flow

  • Ensure a steady water stream exits the motor. The water should feel warm, not hot.
  • If the stream is weak, turn off the engine and clear debris from the flow tube using a wire.

3. Burn Off Remaining Fuel

  • Disconnect the fuel line and run the engine until the carburetor burns out remaining fuel.
  • This prevents fuel from gumming up the system during storage.

4. Inspect for Leaks

  • Remove the engine cowling and check for water or fuel leaks. Address any issues promptly.

5. Lubricate Moving Parts

  • Spray mechanical components and cables with anti-corrosion lubricants like WD-40.
  • Focus on pivots, throttle cables, and the shift mechanism.

6. Cover and Store the Motor

  • Reattach the cowling and clean it. Cover the motor with a canvas or plastic cover for protection. How to Maintain an Outboard Motor

Part 2: Performing Regular Maintenance

1. Replace Spark Plugs and Wires

  • Replace plugs when the engine performance declines or fuel consumption increases.
  • Use a spark tester to check functionality. Replace plug wires along with the plugs for reliability.
  • Ensure wires are reconnected in the correct order.

2. Monitor for Water in the Fuel

  • Check fuel tanks regularly for water contamination.
  • Avoid ethanol-blended fuels when possible, as ethanol can corrode seals and hoses.

3. Inspect Fuel Lines and Fittings

  • Look for leaks or corrosion in the fuel line. Replace damaged components immediately.

4. Replace the Water Pump Impeller

  • Replace every two years (annually for saltwater use).
  • Steps to Replace the Impeller:
    • Remove the impeller housing cover.
    • Extract the old impeller with pliers, clean the housing, and install a new impeller.
    • Reattach the cover plate securely.

5. Use Fresh Fuel

  • Drain old fuel at the end of the boating season to prevent impurities.
  • Dispose of old fuel at a recycling center.

Additional Tips for Motor Longevity

  • Regular Oil Changes: Change engine oil and gear oil per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Check the Battery: Ensure battery terminals are clean and corrosion-free.
  • Follow the Manual: Consult your motor’s user manual for specific maintenance intervals and procedures.

With consistent care and proper storage, your outboard motor will remain efficient and reliable for years of boating adventures.
