Mahendra Patel Abyssinia Group Founder: Revolutionizing East Africa’s Steel Industry
Mahendra Patel, the executive chairman of the Abyssinia Group of Industries (AGI), is one of East Africa’s most influential industrialists, credited with founding Kenya’s first steel rolling mill in 1969. Today, his company is the largest steel producer in the region, with an annual capacity of over 350,000 metric tons.
Early Life and Entry into the Steel Industry
Patel began his journey into the world of steel in 1968, apprenticing while studying Metallurgy at Sheffield in the UK. Just a year later, he made history by purchasing Kenya’s first rolling mill, marking the beginning of a pioneering industrial journey that would span over five decades.
“I’ve lived a life of steel. From labor-intensive mills to integrated factories, Africa has transformed,” says Patel.
Rise of Abyssinia Group of Industries
Founded officially in 2003, Abyssinia Group of Industries (AGI) has grown into a steel powerhouse operating:
- 6 plants in Kenya
- 2 plants in Ethiopia
- Mining operations in Uganda
AGI uses locally sourced iron ore from Homa Bay County and other areas to support its integrated steel operations—the first of its kind in East Africa.
What AGI Produces
AGI manufactures a wide range of steel and iron products for the construction and infrastructure sectors, including:
- TMT reinforced bars
- Angle irons, channels, and window sections
- Galvanized, barbed, and black binding wire
- BRC rolls, weld mesh, and wire nails
- Collated nails (exported globally via Kenya’s Export Processing Zone)
Operations in Ethiopia and Uganda
Ethiopia
AGI has a strong presence in Ethiopia, where it operates an integrated mill producing billets, ingots, and long structural steel products. It has also invested in the cement industry, expanding its construction product offerings.
Uganda
In Uganda, AGI’s mining operations provide a steady supply of raw materials to feed its regional plants, ensuring cost-efficiency and supply chain control.
Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
Patel’s leadership emphasizes advanced technology, quality assurance, and environmental responsibility. AGI integrates modern manufacturing methods and maintains high standards that exceed regional and international expectations.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
AGI is deeply involved in community development and environmental initiatives, such as:
- Building schools and supporting girl child education
- Publishing “Abyssinia Go Green” for climate action
- Partnering with Green Belt Movement and Friends of Nairobi National Park
- Supporting carbon offset efforts and fruit tree planting
- Donating to disaster relief, women’s rights, and orphan welfare programs
Industry Recognition
Mahendra Patel was honored by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) for his 50+ years of service and unmatched contribution to the steel sector.
Legacy and Future
With a skilled workforce, strategic infrastructure, and visionary leadership, Mahendra Patel and AGI have not only industrialized Kenya but also positioned East Africa as a global player in the steel industry.
“The future of Africa lies in industrial strength,” Patel believes—and he’s forging it one steel bar at a time.
