Born as Marie Jane Korbelova on May 15, 1937, in Prague, Madeleine Albright was the daughter of Czech diplomat Josef Korbel. Her family fled to London during World War II, surviving the Blitz, and later emigrated to the United States in 1948. She became a U.S. citizen in 1957.

Albright earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Wellesley College in 1959. She later received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University, specializing in international relations and Russian studies.

Albright’s political journey began with her involvement in Senator Ed Muskie’s 1972 presidential campaign. She became his chief legislative assistant and later joined the National Security Council during the Carter administration.

In academia, she taught at Georgetown University, leading programs focused on Eastern Europe and women in global politics. Her political connections remained strong, and in 1993, she was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations by President Bill Clinton.

In 1997, Madeleine Albright was appointed the 64th Secretary of State, becoming the first woman to hold that position. She was, at the time, the highest-ranking woman in U.S. government history.
