Early Life and Education

Born as Marie Jane Korbelova on May 15, 1937, in Prague, Madeleine Albright was the daughter of Czech diplomat Josef Korbel. Her family fled to London during World War II, surviving the Blitz, and later emigrated to the United States in 1948. She became a U.S. citizen in 1957.

Albright earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Wellesley College in 1959. She later received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University, specializing in international relations and Russian studies.

Early Career and Political Rise

Albright’s political journey began with her involvement in Senator Ed Muskie’s 1972 presidential campaign. She became his chief legislative assistant and later joined the National Security Council during the Carter administration.

In academia, she taught at Georgetown University, leading programs focused on Eastern Europe and women in global politics. Her political connections remained strong, and in 1993, she was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations by President Bill Clinton.

Secretary of State Tenure

In 1997, Madeleine Albright was appointed the 64th Secretary of State, becoming the first woman to hold that position. She was, at the time, the highest-ranking woman in U.S. government history.

Her tenure was marked by:

  • Leading U.S. diplomacy during the Bosnian conflict
  • Supporting sanctions against Iraq over weapons of mass destruction
  • Representing the U.S. in the Hong Kong sovereignty transition
  • Helping establish Kofi Annan as U.N. Secretary-General

Albright also expressed deep regret over the U.N.’s response to the Rwandan Genocide, later calling it one of her greatest professional sorrows.

Business and Publications

She authored multiple bestsellers, including:

  • Madam Secretary (2003)
  • The Mighty and the Almighty
  • Prague Winter
  • Fascism: A Warning
  • Read My Pins

These works contributed significantly to both her public legacy and financial profile.

Personal Life

Albright married Joseph Medill Patterson Albright in 1959 and had three daughters. The couple divorced in 1982. Originally raised Catholic, she converted to the Episcopal Church after marriage. She only discovered her Jewish heritage in adulthood, learning that three of her grandparents perished in the Holocaust.

Albright was honored with numerous honorary degrees and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1998.

Real Estate Holdings

In 1968, the Albrights purchased a Georgetown home for $100,000. In 2023, the house was listed for $4 million. They also owned a 46-acre farm in Purcellville, Virginia.
