What is Ma Huateng’s Net Worth?

Ma Huateng, also known as “Pony,” is a Chinese internet entrepreneur with a net worth of $38 billion. He is the founder, president, chief executive officer, and executive board member of Tencent Holdings, Ltd., one of China’s largest telecommunications companies. Ma’s work with Tencent has made him one of the wealthiest individuals globally. “Time” magazine named him one of the most influential people in 2007, 2014, and 2018, and “Forbes” has frequently included him in various influential lists, such as the “World’s Most Powerful People” and “China’s 100 Richest.”

Net Worth Details

The majority of Ma Huateng’s net worth comes from his 7.4% stake in Tencent Holdings, controlled through Advanced Data Services. In 2016, Ma donated $2.3 billion worth of Tencent shares to a charitable foundation. He also owns $150 million in Hong Kong real estate. In 2022, Tencent Holdings reported revenue of $86 billion.

Early Life

Ma Huateng was born on October 29, 1971, in Chaoyang, Shantou, Guangdong, China. His father was a port manager in Shenzhen, and young Ma often accompanied him to work. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in applied engineering and computer science from Shenzhen University in 1993.

Career

After graduation, Ma worked at China Motion Telecom Development, creating software for pagers, earning less than $200 per month. He later joined Shenzhen Runxun Communications Co. Ltd. In 1998, Ma and four classmates founded Tencent, which became a major player in internet and technology, aiming to improve people’s quality of life through innovative products and services.

Tencent’s initial product, OICQ, was inspired by the ICQ instant messaging service. OICQ quickly gained popularity in China, setting the stage for Tencent’s expansion. Tencent became the largest instant communication service network in China, leading to Ma becoming CEO and chairman of the board. The company’s growth was driven by its instant messaging service and online multi-player games like “League of Legends.”

After AOL acquired ICQ in 1998, it filed an arbitration against Tencent, claiming trademark infringement. Tencent subsequently renamed OICQ to QQ. In 2000, Pacific Century CyberWorks and IDC invested $2.2 million for a 40% stake in Tencent. Tencent added an online gaming platform in 2004 and a C2C platform, Paipai.com, in 2005.

In 2010, Ma led the creation of WeChat, a text messaging/group chat app that became the world’s largest instant messaging platform. In 2015, Tencent announced plans to build an “internet hospital” in Wuzhen for medicine delivery and long-distance diagnoses.

Personal Life

Ma Huateng is married to Wang Dan-Ting, and they have a daughter named Ma Manlin. His nickname “Pony” is derived from the English translation of his surname, which means “horse.” He served as a deputy to the 5th Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress and a delegate in the 12th National People’s Congress. Ma has spoken about the importance of online management and censorship to prevent misinformation and disputes among citizens and between countries.
