Lilian Odira delivered a spectacular performance to win the women’s 800-meter gold at the 2025 World Athletics Championships. The Kenyan athlete surged ahead in the final 100 meters, crossing the line in a championship record of 1:54.62, surpassing top competitors including Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson.
Odira’s victory marked a thrilling conclusion to a fiercely contested race, as she overtook early leaders in the last stretch to secure Kenya’s seventh gold of the championships.
Beating the Favorites
The race was expected to be dominated by Kenya’s Mary Moraa, reigning Commonwealth and Diamond League champion, and Olympic silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson. Moraa set the pace in the first lap but faded in the final stretch, finishing 7th with 1:57.10.
Odira’s triumph signals the rise of a new star in middle-distance running, challenging established names and establishing her as a formidable contender in global athletics.
“I knew I had to be patient and trust my kick. This gold is for Kenya, for every young girl dreaming of the world stage,” Odira said after the race.
