What is Len Blavatnik’s Net Worth?

Len Blavatnik is a Ukrainian-American businessman with a net worth of $40 billion. He runs his empire through the holding company Access Industries, which he founded in 1986. Access Industries owns the majority of Warner Music Group, the sports media company DAZN, and a significant portion of LyondellBasell Industries, one of the largest chemical companies in the world. Additionally, Blavatnik has stakes in various other enterprises, including a minority ownership in United Co. Rusal, Russia’s largest aluminum producer.

Early Life and Education

Leonard Valentinovich Blavatnik was born on June 14, 1957, in Odessa, then part of the Ukrainian SSR in the Soviet Union. He was raised in a Jewish family that later moved to Yaroslavl, a Russian city north of Moscow. Blavatnik attended Moscow State University of Railway Engineering but was unable to complete his coursework due to his family’s emigration to the United States in 1978. He later earned a master’s degree in computer science from Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science in 1981 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1989.

Career

In 1986, Blavatnik founded Access Industries Holdings, where he serves as chairman and president. Through Access Industries, Blavatnik controls significant portions of LyondellBasell, Warner Music Group, and other publicly traded assets.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Blavatnik acquired numerous former state assets in Russia, particularly in the aluminum sector, becoming a major player in the industry. He invested in Sual, which later became part of United Company Rusal, the world’s largest aluminum producer. Blavatnik served on Rusal’s board from 2007 to 2016.

Blavatnik also formed the Renova investment vehicle with Viktor Vekselberg, acquiring stakes in the Irkutsk Aluminum Plant and other smelters and plants, as well as a coal mine in Kazakhstan. In 1997, Blavatnik’s companies formed AAR (Alfa, Access, Renova), which acquired almost half of the oil producer Tyumen Oil (TNK) for $800 million. In 2013, the Russian oil company Rosneft paid AAR $28 billion in cash for its 50% stake in TNK, representing the liquidation of most of Blavatnik’s Russian assets.

Private Investments

Through Access Industries, Blavatnik purchased Basell Polyolefins from Royal Dutch Shell and BASF for just under $6 billion. Basell then acquired Lyondell Chemical Company, forming LyondellBasell Industries, which became the world’s eighth-largest chemical company by net sales. Although the U.S. operations of LyondellBasell filed for bankruptcy in 2009, the company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a much stronger financial position the following year. Access Industries currently owns about 21% of the company.

In 2011, Access Industries acquired Warner Music Group for $3.3 billion. The company has since expanded its involvement in music and entertainment, investing in the music streaming service Deezer, acquiring Perform Group, and launching Access Entertainment. Blavatnik also owns AI Film, which backed the film “The Butler,” and DAZN Group, often referred to as the “Netflix of sports.”

Philanthropy

Blavatnik is a notable philanthropist through the Blavatnik Family Foundation, supporting cultural and philanthropic institutions. He has been a benefactor for the British Museum, Tate Modern, Royal Opera House, National Portrait Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art, among others.

In 2013, Blavatnik was made a chevalier of the French Legion d’Honneur. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the 2017 Birthday Honors for his services to philanthropy.

Personal Life

Blavatnik is married to Emily Appelson Blavatnik, and the couple has four children. They own multiple high-dollar residences around the world, including a Grade II listed building in Kensington Palace Gardens and a residence in Manhattan. In 2019, Blavatnik made headlines for purchasing a 10-acre estate in Bel-Air, known as “Chartwell,” for $150 million, the most expensive home purchase in California at the time.

Blavatnik holds both British and American citizenship and maintains friendships with various high-profile politicians, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former U.S. President Donald Trump. He is also a business partner of Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg.

Len Blavatnik’s journey from a Soviet émigré to a global business magnate and philanthropist showcases his strategic acumen and commitment to cultural and societal development. His diversified investments and charitable contributions have left a lasting impact on multiple industries and communities worldwide.
