The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has recently marked a significant milestone by showcasing its GavaConnect Enterprise API platform, which has now attracted over 1,000 developers. This milestone was highlighted during the second API Masterclass, an event designed to reaffirm KRA’s commitment to simplifying tax systems and fostering collaboration with the Kenyan tech community. The event, held at State House, Nairobi, showcased KRA’s focus on co-creating solutions that aim to transform the country’s digital tax landscape.
Empowering Developers for a More Efficient Tax System
The GavaConnect platform now offers 16 powerful APIs, such as PIN checkers, Tax Compliance Certificate verifiers, NIL Return filing, and e-Slip verification. These APIs are aimed at streamlining tax compliance for businesses and taxpayers by improving efficiency and simplifying the online systems that citizens are required to interact with annually. KRA’s platform is the first initiative of its kind by a public institution in Kenya, enabling private sector and business players to easily integrate with its systems.
Transforming Tax Administration through Innovation
According to Grace Wandera, the Deputy Commissioner of Citizen Relations & Communication at KRA, the platform’s success reflects the growing industry interest in tax-tech innovation. “The GavaConnect API platform has exposed 16 APIs and registered over 1000 developers, demonstrating the strong interest in tax-tech solutions,” said Wandera.
Annastacia Githuba, Deputy Commissioner for Program Delivery & Client Engagement, emphasized that this collaboration with developers goes beyond tax collection. “This is about empowering developers to innovate, build, and monetize solutions that make tax compliance simpler, faster, and more accessible,” she added.
The Role of the API Masterclass in Co-Creating Solutions
The API Masterclass series was a key part of this initiative, offering developers hands-on training, interactive API showcases, and a chance to suggest future features for improving the system. The series has played a critical role in strengthening KRA’s partnership with the tech community and positioning the tax agency as a leader in digital tax innovation.
KRA’s Commitment to Expanding GavaConnect
Looking ahead, KRA plans to continue expanding the GavaConnect API platform to support programs such as the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) and advanced VAT compliance tools. These expansions will help further simplify the compliance and reporting processes for businesses in Kenya, making it easier for business owners to adhere to tax regulations.
As KRA continues to expand its reach, GavaConnect will undoubtedly play a crucial role in modernizing the country’s tax administration and encouraging the growth of tax-tech in Kenya.
