In a bid to enhance customer experience and streamline tax-related services, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has launched a new WhatsApp chatbot that allows Kenyans to file their taxes and access other key services without the need to visit KRA offices. This innovative service, announced on Thursday, January 22, 2026, is available 24/7, making tax services more accessible than ever before.
To access the service, Kenyans need to save the official KRA WhatsApp number, +254 711099999, and start a conversation by sending either “Hi” or “Menu.” The chatbot will then guide users through identity verification and present them with a list of 15 available services. These services include tax filing, PIN management, ETIMS invoicing, tax return assistance, and access to tax-related information and queries.
The WhatsApp chatbot aims to simplify the tax filing process by providing a step-by-step guide on how to file tax returns through the KRA iTax portal. This service not only enhances accessibility but also reduces the need for physical interactions at KRA offices, saving time and resources for both taxpayers and the authority.
KRA’s Commissioner General, Humphrey Wattaga, highlighted that the introduction of this chatbot is part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to embrace technological advancements like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data analytics to improve tax management and overall efficiency. He emphasized that these upgrades are key to modernizing KRA’s systems and boosting revenue collection.
The KRA’s Chairman, Ndiriitu Muriithi, also reiterated the importance of IT modernization in achieving the authority’s revenue targets. For the 2025/26 financial year, KRA aims to collect Kshs 2.968 trillion, marking a 15.4% growth over the previous year’s collections.
This WhatsApp service follows the recent rollout of a new USSD service (*222#), which allows taxpayers with basic mobile phones to access a variety of KRA services, including PIN registration, turnover tax, tax compliance certificates, and more. The new digital services are aimed at ensuring that even those without smartphones or reliable internet access can engage with KRA efficiently.
