Kitui Airstrip and Ithookwe Stadium Signal Devolution Gains Ahead of Mashujaa Day

Kitui County is set to host the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations, with the completion of two landmark projects — the Kitui Airstrip and Ithookwe Stadium — underscoring the success of Kenya’s devolution journey. The newly upgraded airstrip and the modernized stadium are expected to enhance connectivity, stimulate local trade, and position Kitui as a key regional hub in Eastern Kenya.

Kitui Airstrip Boosts Regional Connectivity

Located a few kilometres from Kitui town at latitude -1.37279 and longitude 37.97810, the Kitui Airstrip now features a rehabilitated runway (5/23) capable of accommodating light aircraft. This development opens direct access to the county for dignitaries, investors, and tourists, significantly improving mobility and market access.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, during a pre-event tour of the facility, emphasized that the airstrip’s completion symbolizes the true spirit of devolution envisioned by the late Raila Amolo Odinga, who championed equitable regional development.

“Devolution, one of the enduring dreams that the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga so passionately championed, continues to take shape through projects that knit our counties closer together,” said Omollo. “Under President William Ruto’s leadership, the government remains committed to expanding inter-county connectivity and economic frontiers.”

Omollo highlighted that the improved airstrip would boost trade, tourism, and logistics, enabling local enterprises to access broader markets and stimulating growth in Kitui’s hospitality and transport sectors.

Ithookwe Stadium: A Legacy of Devolution

The 10,000-seater Ithookwe Stadium, once a modest showground, has been transformed into a modern sports and events complex complete with VIP lounges, terraces, and improved access roads. It will serve as the official venue for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, reflecting Kitui’s growing prominence in national development.

During his inspection of the facility, PS Omollo described the stadium as a symbol of devolved success and a “legacy project for the people of Kitui.” He noted that beyond hosting national celebrations, the stadium will serve as a hub for sports, cultural festivals, and youth empowerment programs, fostering social and economic inclusion.

According to the Ministry of Sports and the Kitui County Government, the stadium’s development was a collaborative effort that demonstrates how county and national partnerships can deliver life-changing infrastructure.

Economic Impact and Local Optimism

Local traders have expressed optimism about the twin projects, citing an uptick in business as preparations for the national holiday intensify. Hotels, transport operators, and small enterprises in Kitui have reported increased demand, with visitors expected to arrive in large numbers.

The infrastructural facelift has also generated employment and boosted investor confidence, signaling Kitui’s rise as a key destination for events, tourism, and investment.

As the nation converges on Kitui for Mashujaa Day 2025, the airstrip and stadium stand as living proof that devolution works — transforming counties through tangible, people-centred development that connects Kenyans both physically and symbolically.
