Kisii University is a public institution of higher learning located in Kisii County, Kenya. Established in 2013, it has grown into one of the country’s most dynamic universities, currently hosting over 10,000 students across multiple campuses. The university operates under the motto “Fons Scientiae” (Source of Knowledge) and is led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nathan Oyori Ogechi. Its main campus sits on 61 acres of land donated by the County Council of Gusii, just two kilometers from Kisii Town along the Kisii–Kilgoris Road.
Historical Background
The university’s journey dates back to 1965, when it was founded as a primary teachers’ training college. In 1983, it was upgraded to a secondary teachers’ training college offering diploma programs. The institution continued to evolve, and in 1994, the Government of Kenya converted it into a campus of Egerton University.
In 1999, Kisii Campus launched its first degree program, the Bachelor of Business and Management, alongside a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. By 23 August 2007, the institution had officially become Kisii University College under Legal Notice No.163 of 2007. It was later granted a charter on 6 February 2013, officially becoming Kenya’s 13th public university.

Kisii University operates several campuses across the region, including the Main Campus, Kisii Town, Keroka, Nyamira, Ogembo, Migori, and Kisumu campuses. The university also maintains additional satellite campuses in Nairobi, Eldoret, Kitale, and Kabarnet to serve students nationwide.

Technological and Academic Innovation
Kisii University has embraced digital transformation through its Directorate of E-Learning, which expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The directorate supports remote instruction through online platforms and facilitates student orientation, course delivery, and examination processes.
Through the SelfCare platform, staff and students can access university services remotely, including registration, fee payments, and document requests. The university has also implemented online orientation programs to simplify new student enrollment.
Research and Community Impact
In its commitment to advancing research and innovation, the university is establishing a Centre for Natural Products and Drugs at Nyangweta Farm in South Mugirango Constituency. The center will focus on research in medicinal flora and fauna, developing natural pharmaceutical products from local resources. This project aims to make Kisii University a regional leader in natural product research and contribute to healthcare innovation in Kenya.
Student Life and Support
Kisii University supports student welfare through programs like the Anti-Addiction Unit, which promotes awareness, prevention, and early detection of substance abuse. The unit’s mission is to foster a healthy academic community through advocacy, empowerment, and counseling.
The institution also prioritizes inclusivity, mental health, and extracurricular engagement, creating a balanced environment for personal growth and academic success.
Legacy and Future Vision
As one of Kenya’s youngest chartered universities, Kisii University has made remarkable progress in expanding access to quality education in western Kenya. Its emphasis on research, innovation, and technology-driven learning positions it as a key contributor to Kenya’s Vision 2030 development goals.
With its strong academic foundations and expanding infrastructure, Kisii University continues to uphold its mission as a “Source of Knowledge”—a place where students not only learn but also innovate, lead, and impact society positively.
