Hidden beneath the shadow of Morop Hill, the enchanting Kikojo (or Kikocho) Falls stands as one of Baringo County’s most hauntingly beautiful natural treasures. Tucked deep within the Tugen Hills, this waterfall is more than a scenic spectacle—it is a place steeped in legend, spirituality, and natural wonder. Surrounded by towering tamarind trees and the soothing sound of rushing water, Kikojo Falls offers an immersive hiking and cultural experience for those who venture off the beaten path.
Located near Koroto Village, about 47 kilometers northeast of Kabarnet Town via the Kabartonjo–Kipsaraman Road, the falls sit at the foot of Morop Hill, forming part of the region’s most rewarding hiking trails. The 10-kilometer round-trip hike to Kikojo Falls is an easy-to-moderate trek, suitable for hikers of average fitness. The route meanders through forested slopes, open hillsides, and rocky patches, unveiling breathtaking views of Kirandich Dam, Kipkolel Forest, Lake Baringo, and, on a clear day, even Mount Kenya in the distance. Though the trail is unmarked, a local guide is highly recommended to navigate its twists and turns.
The effort to reach the falls is well rewarded. Cascading through the rocks in silvery streams, Kikojo Falls plunges into a tranquil pool below, where a dark cave stretches for nearly 50 meters beneath the waterfall. According to Tugen mythology, this cavern was once the abode of the Rain God, a revered spirit believed to control rainfall and fertility in the region. The legend tells that the Rain God was slain by a brave warrior named Arap Tarno, after which peace returned to the valley—but not before the deity, said to have been pregnant, left behind descendants in the realm of storms.
Today, the cave—once feared—is open to visitors, divided into seven natural chambers. Entering it requires braving the icy waters of the falls, a thrilling experience for adventurous souls. The atmosphere, a blend of spiritual mystery and natural serenity, makes Kikojo Falls one of the most symbolic landmarks of the Tugen Hills.
Whether you come for a challenging hike, a spiritual journey, or the sheer beauty of cascading waters, Kikojo Falls captures the wild, mystical essence of Baringo’s highland wilderness. It’s a destination where myth meets adventure, and every drop of water tells a story from generations past.
