Kericho Governor Erick Mutai impeached — again — after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted overwhelmingly to remove him from office during a tense session on Friday, August 15, 2025. This marks the second impeachment attempt against Mutai, following a previous one that was overturned by the Senate.
The impeachment motion, tabled by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony, secured 33 votes in favor out of 47 MCAs, comfortably surpassing the required two-thirds majority. Fourteen MCAs voted against the motion. The vote was conducted electronically, despite an unsuccessful bid by the governor’s lawyer, Katwa Kigen, to have it done by roll call.
Heated Session and Chaos in the Assembly
Chaos broke out moments after the Speaker confirmed Mutai’s impeachment. The heated debate reflected deep divisions in the Assembly, with tensions spilling over after the results were announced.
The motion accuses the governor of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources. Governor Mutai, who was present during the proceedings, listened as MCAs debated his fate.
Next Steps: Senate to Decide Mutai’s Fate
Following the vote, the Speaker announced that the matter will proceed to the Senate, where Governor Mutai will have an opportunity to defend himself. If the Senate upholds the impeachment, Mutai will be permanently removed from office. If not, he will retain his position as Kericho Governor.
This second impeachment contrasts sharply with the first, when 31 MCAs voted against him, but the Senate saved him from removal. Whether history will repeat itself or lead to his permanent ouster will now depend on the Senate’s verdict.
