Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Cold Weather in Multiple Regions

The Kenya Met weather forecast August 2025 warns of persistent rainfall and cold conditions across several parts of the country from August 15 to 21, 2025. The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) issued the alert on Friday, August 15, predicting scattered heavy rainfall and low temperatures in multiple counties.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Various Counties

According to the KMD, rainfall is expected in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, and North-western Kenya. Counties likely to be affected include:

  • Lake Victoria Basin & Rift Valley: Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
  • Highlands East of the Rift Valley: Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
  • North-western Kenya: Turkana and Samburu.

Rainfall in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley is expected to intensify to over 20mm in 24 hours on Sunday, August 17, before spreading to the Highlands East of the Rift Valley. The heavy rains are forecast to persist until Tuesday, August 19, then reduce in intensity from Wednesday, August 20.

Cold and Cloudy Conditions

Kenya Met has also warned of very cold weather over the next five days, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern lowlands, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland areas of Tana River County.

Residents in these areas should prepare for temperatures as low as 7°C during the first two days of the forecast period, rising slightly to around 9°C for the remainder of the week. Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are expected throughout.
